Executives at Investec, a U.S.-based investment bank, announced today that they believe Microsoft is in negotiations to buy French media company Vivendi's interactive division.

(Ed Note: Before you get too excited, Vivendi Interactive is the gaming divison of Vivendi, not the part which controls other companies such as Universial Studios.

Jeff Van Rhee, Investec's director of enterprise software research, told Reuters he had received indications a deal was in the works. "There was some pretty actionable data that said something had just happened and things were heating up pretty quickly," he said.

This is not, however, exactly new news. Rumors have been persistent for months that Vivendi (which controls both Sierra and Blizzard) was interested in getting out of the game business, and at various times its games division has been said to be either going up for sale or it would make a public offering and go off on its own. Microsoft, being Microsoft, would love to snap it up, but both Sony and Electronic Arts have also expressed interest.

Vivendi, however, is reportedly asking between $1-2 billion, and Microsoft may be the only one with that kind of money to throw around (remember when they bought up Rare late last year for $375 million -- cash?). So as rumors go, this is pretty much a no-brainer. Is it true, and will it happen soon? That depends, on how good Investec's "actionable data" is.

Wow, Microsoft sure is on a buying frenzy, I feel sorry for Nintendo who has to sit and watch these companies get gobbled up and shipped off to develop for xbox-only.

It's not like they're forbidden from doing the same thing.

::sigh:: Nintendo SOLD Rare. They let them go, Rare was not snapped from under Nintendo's feet. Get it right. Nintendo was given the oppertunity to buy Rare outright more than a year ago, but declined. Don't feel sorry for Nintendo, they have $375 million dollars extra to play around with and add to their ~$7 billion bank balance. It's all good for them, as they can use that money to seed development houses such as Retro (Metroid Prime), Brownie Brown (Magical Vacation) and Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness), as well as purchasing exclusive rights for some games and putting into development of their next console. Nintendo will be doing just fine. Who knows, a devel house better than Rare could spring up in the next year or two and make Nintendo's second party line up look even better than it's every been (I'd attribute Retro or SK to doing this, but I'd like to see a few more titles from both of them first)

FYI: Valve is NOT owned by Seirra or Vivendi. They don't even have the publishing rights anymore to the sequel, I believe it was stated. Man, this stinks, though. Now it makes my choice for the next next-gen consoles to buy even harder. Nintendo has their amazing exclusives, Sony has excellent 3rd party support and Microsoft has everyone.
