#592142698 Reputation system enabled & explained

Posted by Steven P. on 23 January 2010 - 10:37

The reputation system at Neowin has been set to only allow positive votes, we believe that allowing negative votes could be abused (even though we can protect staff groups from that). Members may not be singled out for personal attacks or a system that promotes negative karma votes.

Staff, MVC's and Veterans have unlimited votes, this is because we believe we are better suited to single out good members for their contributions

Registered users may vote 5 times per 24 hour period, so use your vote wisely!

Tier 1 Subscribers may vote 10 times per day as an enhanced paid for feature.
Tier 2 Subscribers may vote 20 times per day as an enhanced paid for feature.

Any members in Restricted groups may not vote at all.

Nobody can also give rep points for members in the banned or restricted groups, they are there for a reason!

#589076736 A brief summary of Neowin User groups

Posted by Steven P. on 20 December 2007 - 16:46

Staff
Our staff are mostly from Europe (3 of the 4 Admins) and US/Canada; but the remaining staff groups are purposely split between EU & US timezones to try and cover a 24 hour period.

Site Operations

Administrator
This should be obvious, there are 4 administrators on Neowin, 2 site founders Marcel and Myself, Daniel Fleshbourne (was the first staffer we took on and was promoted to this in early 2001), as well as our American co-owner Brad Wardell (aka Frogboy).

Development
This group consists of coders and developers for all aspects of behind the scenes work at Neowin, including image creation. This group has exclusive access to our servers.

Forum Operations
Color coded from green.

Supervisor
The Supervisor group was created just over 2 years ago to take the load off the admins, the staff selected (usually a group of no more than 6) are long term trusted staff. They are given administrator permissions and can make operational decisions without fear of being over ruled by the admin group. This group also has an ops forum and many decisions are talked about and decided between admins and supervisors with the help of developers.

Global Mod
This group is another name for "Super Moderator" meaning that anyone in this group can moderate anywhere including news comments. Most Global Moderators are assigned a section to supervise, where they provide guidance to Moderators.

Moderator
This group contains staff that are usually new to the staff and have been given a specific forum or number of forums to moderate exclusively, they cannot moderate everywhere so we try to keep this group small. They also have permissions to edit News comments. This group includes the Chat Moderators.

News Operations
Color coded from red. News is submitted both in UK & US English, depending on the location of the poster.

Senior News Editor
Head of the news team. Directs, approves and supervises all news activities.

News Editor
This group can promote news stories submitted by News Reporters to the main page, and is responsible for quality control.

News Reporter
This group submits news to the site, and in most cases is paid per article for the effort. This group is moderated by Editors & Senior Editors.

Non Staff

vetstar.gifVeteran
This is where ex staffers go that have contributed a lot to Neowin. Not all ex staffers go here, if they leave on bad terms or simply did not deliver while on staff then they are instead returned to their previous group.

+Subscriber and +Subscriber²
The people in this group paid for additional privileges and enhanced service, or just to support Neowin financially! You can view our subscription details & pricing here.

+Most Valued Contributor
This group was selected exclusively by the Neowin staff, it is a group of members who the staff felt have been model members and very helpful to existing or new members of Neowin. Requires being a member of Neowin for a year as well as having a minimum of 500 posts.

#596250483 R.I.P. BeLGaRaTh

Posted by vetDirtyLarry on 07 February 2014 - 19:07

This morning I am not sure why or how, but I had realized I had not heard from BeLGaRaTh from here for quite some time. When I started looking into the last time he was active on this site, I saw it had actually been much longer than I thought it was. I then checked his activity on XBox Live and PSN, and it was also a very long time. February of last year to be exact. I immediately felt awful it took me pretty much a year to realize I had not talked to him in awhile.

For those that did not know, he had some pretty serious health conditions. No need to go into any details, but needless to say, it has been confirmed that he passed away at the age of 45 last year. Exactly a year ago actually.

He was a really great guy. I always found it amazing how he basically took the awful cards that he was dealt and made the most of it as best as he could. He was incredibly generous as well. Always hooking me up with something game related just because he could.

Really sucks to find out he did pass away. It sucks even more to realize it has taken me so damn long to realize it. I feel ashamed for sure.

R.I.P. BeLGaRaTh

And if anyone is questioning why this is in the Gamers Hangout, this was the place he was most active in, and he truly loved video games. Loved them. So I only think it is appropriate we honor his memory in the section of the website that he was most active in. If a Mod feels otherwise, feel free to move this thread.

#595212175 An open letter to *some* members regarding Jokes forum

Posted by Steven P. on 28 September 2012 - 11:28

You know who you are.

The childish behavior going on in Jokes & Funny Stuff forum is getting old. I have no qualms about banning a small number of people who are intentionally bringing down the quality of my site.

So, be forewarned, this is being monitored and action will be taken sooner rather than later.

If you have never had a run in with a Neowin forum/news comments moderator and have been here a while, then we're doing a good job. If you have, I hope you appreciate the bs we have to put up with all the time :p

Be cool, thank a (Neowin) moderator today! :)

#596549427 Muslim woman offended by restaurant Bacon ad

Posted by FloatingFatMan on 24 August 2014 - 07:27

Why is it so many people go out of their way to not offend Muslims these days?  When you move to another's land, you adjust to THEIR way of life, not the other way around.

If she doesn't like seeing ads for pork products, she has the choice to leave.

#592616190 Portal is now free until May 24th for PC & MAC on Steam

Posted by vetLOC on 12 May 2010 - 19:56

Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it's free. End of story.

Well, technically speaking, there are some strings attached. Fortunately, they're entirely decorative. We just like the way they look, swaying in the gentle breeze created by a million people simultanously fainting from shock at the news that Portal is free. Now you have no reason not to try Portal.

"I have a reason," some of you are probably typing into an angry email. "You see, sir, I own a Mac."

Well guess what: For the first time ever, Portal is also available for the Mac.

"Capitol news! But the excellent puzzle adventure Portal won over 40 Game of the Year awards; Surely it must cost at least five or six hundred dollars."

You'd think that, especially since it actually won over 70 Game of the Year Awards. But, like we keep saying, Portal is free. Free on the Mac. Free on the PC. But only until May 24th. So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging - which is you ever-so-slightly moving your index finger just barely enough to click the big red "download" button right there to the left.

Free Portal Page
Portal Store page (just click on the green Install button and you got Portal)

Enjoy :)

#595609344 Just how many people hate Windows 8?

Posted by Detection on 31 March 2013 - 23:37

I wonder how many people hating on Win8 have actually sat down in front of one and used it for a couple of days

I flattened my machine and used 8 as my only OS for weeks and weeks, maybe longer, and tried very very hard to understand and enjoy it, but in the end it was such a PITA to do the simplest of tasks that I got rid and reinstalled 7

When I did, my machine completely made sense again, things were in sensible places and my brain didn't hurt trying to remember to click here and move the mouse to this corner and wait for this to appear, etc etc

Change is not the issue, pointless retarded changes that make things take longer / make things awkward, is the issue

#594900621 "Like" button moved to bottom.... don't "Like" it!

Posted by remixedcat on 31 May 2012 - 22:13

I don't like where the "like" button is now.... it messes with my muscle memory and it's too close to sigs and I might click on a sig link I didn't want to click by accident when stuff jumps around when it loads.

it was best on the top right of each post where it was by default...

was it moved to mimic VB or Xenforo?

This bothers me where it is now.... :-(
