Apple recently recruited an engineer working on Microsoft's HoloLens, leading to speculation that it could be working on a virtual or augmented reality project. Nick Thompson reportedly changed positions from leading audio hardware engineering for HoloLens to Apple.
Nick Thompson had previously worked for Apple for 7 years, working on audio features of a wide range of Apple products, prior to being employed by Microsoft.
This is not the first inkling that Apple may be putting efforts into augmented reality, as Apple has acquired augmented reality company Metaio earlier this year. Apple had also picked up over 170 patents from Metaio further leading to speculation that the company may soon reveal its efforts in the augmented reality space.
There have also been further reports that Apple is working on implementing virtual reality in its Maps app, which would allow users to point their camera towards a point of interest and trigger a virtual overlay with relevant information.
Last week we had also reported that Apple is rumoured to introduce a motion-sensitive remote control to attract casual gamers, which may very well be a simple introduction to Apple's efforts into the virtual/augmented reality space.
We hope to be hearing new information at Apple's event on September 9th about iOS 9 and what possibilities lay ahead for the future.
