ROUBAIX, France, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Armed men have taken hostages after gun shots were fired in the northern French town of Roubaix, a police source said on Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear whether the gunmen were linked to the attacks in Paris on Nov. 13.
"An operation is underway after hostages were taken. Gunshots were fired and the neighbourhood has been cordoned off," the source told Reuters. "A bank director and his family may have been taken as hostages."
Medical and fire services confirmed that an operation was underway in Roubaix, which is near the border with Belgium, without giving further details.

A hostage situation in the northern French town of Roubaix has ended, with the hostages now safe, local officials say.

Reports said up to three armed men took hostages in the town near the border with Belgium.

One of the hostage takers was killed during the police operation, local officials say.

The incident was not related to the security situation in France following the 13 November attacks in Paris.

Local authorities said the hostages were now in a "secure place", while a police source told Reuters news agency that the operation would soon be over and that several suspects had been arrested.

Local media said the incident took place at around 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT), and an area of the town was cordoned off.

It is not clear how many people were held hostage.

Gunshots were fired, according to reports and local residents.

The armed men had been planning a robbery, officials say.

The information from the various TV network are rather confusing: this was apparently a hold up where gangsters wanted to force a bank director to gain access to a bank. Three hostages are safe, one gangster has been killed, one gangster has been caught, others are being chased. Not related to the terror attack in Paris from the reports.

They didn't time that well, if you're going to rob a bank don't do it a week after a terrorist incident when the whole country is on high alert and the Police are twitchy.

Exactly. The difference in Detroit is that by the time the cops had arrived the bank customers would have already shot them (this actually happened 2 weeks ago.)

A small price to pay for having very little gun crime at all.
