Server 2008 DHCP Name

Recommended Posts

Hi,

i've noticed something odd on some of our machines on our network. Under dhcp leases some devices names are showing as WW*.emeadecentral.bmw.corp or WW*.europe.bmw.corp rather than their designated computer names. DNS shows proper names.

Anyone seen this behaviour before?

Cheers,

Were these machines ever added to the network prior? Like did you ever do an OS re-installation? Are these machines perhaps MACs?

The machines that are having issues. Can you find internal servers with them?

This one is a long shot, but can you check the network adapters of the cluprit machines and verify that the DNS wasn't manually changed to something else?

What happens when when you an ipconfig /flushdns then ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew on the culprit machines?

Just out of curiosity is the IP range of your internal lan accidentally public addresses instead of a 192.x.x.x.x 172.x.x.x 10.x.x.x

What about your gateway internal address? Is that perhaps a public address instead of 192.x.x.x.x 172.x.x.x 10.x.x.x

Are you affiliated with BMW?

Is your domain a part of a forest?

Is your DNS server set to Dynamic Updates?

Do you have invalid reverse DNS pointers?

Does reverse lookups show more than 1 result?

DNS aging / scavenging setup correctly?

Just trying to gather more info.
