Apple discontinues Thunderbolt Display after nearly five-year run

It's been nearly five years since the release of Apple's Thunderbolt Display, and although it was once considered an impressive unit, the product has since become quite long in the tooth, with many hoping for a revamp. Apple has now officially discontinued the aging display, bringing hope that the company may release a replacement in the near future.

When the Thunderbolt Display was released in 2011, it offered a resolution 2560 × 1440 pixels, 720p webcam, mic, stereo speakers with sub, and a variety of ports (Thunderbolt, FireWire 800, three USB 2.0, and a Gigabit Ethernet). Many of the aforementioned specifications have now been eclipsed with current high-end displays touting 4K and 5K resolutions.

While it's speculated that Apple will release an updated model in the near future, there hasn't been much information in regards to the rumored replacement. For now, those who are still interested can head over to the Apple site, where you can still purchase the display, which is priced at $999 USD.
