Apple has now sold over one billion iPhones

Whether you're a fan of Apple's iPhones or not, you can't deny their extraordinary success, and their significant impact on the global smartphone market over the last nine years.

The first iPhone went on sale in June 2007, and now, Apple has revealed that it's sold over a billion iPhones since then.

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the news to employees today, saying:

iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history. It's become more than a constant companion. iPhone is truly an essential part of our daily life and enables much of what we do throughout the day.

Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth iPhone. We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day."

But the phenomenal success of the iPhone line has been somewhat overshadowed by a drop in demand for the high-end handsets over the last six months. This week, in its latest earnings results, Apple revealed that iPhone sales fell by 15% year-over-year during the third quarter of its 2016 fiscal year.
