If you've already read all the posts, it takes you to the first post, if not, it takes you to the first unread post. You'll see the URL when you hover the link ends with ?do=getNewComment, the behaviour that makes it take you to the first post if you've read everything is something built into IPB, not a Mini Spy feature / bug
