How to use the external SATA ports on case/motherboard?

Recommended Posts

I have two SATA ports on the back of my PC and was hoping to hook up a spare SATA drive I have, to use as a backup drive, but when I search around for enclosures they all seem to want to do Sata -> USB conversions?

How can I hook up the spare drive to the back SATA ports for a better performance than the USB 2.0 ports I have? :P

*My board is a ASUS PK5-E (SATA 2/USB 2.0) I stopped using an external USB2 drive (Toshiba 1TB "book" or something)  because of the terrible performance and drastically slower boot times as well, but I still want to be able to backup my data to a second drive :P.

You need a eSATA enclosure which will allow you to add 1 or more drives.

You can use something like this which is more specialized:

Or something similar to the ones here:

Finding decent enclosures to stick standard internal HDDs in I've found to be difficult. You might have more luck searching for HDD docking stations, which in my opinion are a better solution anyway. There are solutions out there with eSATA, I'll maybe try to find some links later if you need them.
