Can any monitor with DisplayPort 1.2 be daisy chained?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed the Dell U2415 can be daisy chained via. its DisplayPort connection.

Does the monitor have to be DisplayPort 1.2?

What is the MST part about in the above review? (is MST another term for "DisplayPort out"?)

Are not all DisplayPort 1.2 monitor connections MST also?

Just trying to understand it.

Yes it has to be Displayport 1.2 on the initial monitor with MST and any monitors in the chain except the last in the chain.  Only 1.2 and newer support MST (Multi Stream Transport).  MST allows for multiple video streams on the same cable, it's how some of the 4K monitors operate as some are literally dual panels put together.

You will be limited on resolution in the chain, please see the following to know your limitations:

Probably daft question but here goes... Do monitors in a chain need two DisplayPort ports? Or is it done using a hub/crazy cable?

You can get a $100 3 port hub that supports any type plugged into it. Just the video card needs to support DP 1.2. Nvidia cards have trouble with this though as they don't adhere to the standard.

Monitors like decent Dell ones (not their cheaper ones) have a DP port in and a DP port out (MST).
