Looking for a new Ultrabook convertible to replace my Laptop

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I'm looking to buy a new Ultrabook convertible in the next 3 or 4 months to replace my old Laptop. There's so much options (lot of them are bad) out there it's easy to get lost so i would like some suggestions from the community (ideally from people having used the suggested Ultrabook convertibles). The suggestion can be a model that will be released next fall.

I will mostly do web design and dev on it. I would like it to work as a good graphics tablet and at the same time be able to do some coding on it. It doesn't need to be teh best graphics tablet ever it just needs to be a viable option will travelling.

Surface Pro looks interesting (specially now it is sold at only 500$) but i fear the screen will be too small to code on it and the touch cover not confortable enough. I've seen many 10 inch tablets in action and it's damn too small imo.

Here's my requirements :

1. Must be running Windows 8 (not RT).

2. Must come with a good digitizer and pen and this is a requirement.

3. 4GB of ram is a minimum but i would prefer 8GB.

4. I don't plan to game on it so a good apu is more than enough for me (i'm okay with a core i5 or something like that).

5. 128GB SSD minimum. 256GB is a big plus.

6. I would consider a 13 inch ips screen (1080p) to be the minimum (15 inch would probably be better to work but it also means more expensive and bigger). If you want to recommend me the Surface Pro you need to convince me i can seldomly code on a 10 inch screen.

7. Portability is a big plus. I already have a good desktop computer and graphics tablet at home so i will use this Ultrabook only when travelling so the smaller the better as long as it's not too small to work on it.

8. Battery life is a big plus too. If i can work for 6 hours on it then it's good.

9. Something that is running cool and mostly silent would be welcome too.

Finally i already have a Nexus 7 FHD so i wont use this as a tablet while at home. Ty for the suggestion guys.

[edit]

I realise what i want might not exist so if it is the case don't be afraid to tell me.

  • 5 months later...

I guess i'll go with the Surface 3 12inchs.

Is it a good option? How is the pen? Is it good to draw? Also it is working well as a laptop? 12 inchs looks small i would prefer 13 inchs (i'm talking about the Surface her not my personal "tool"). Does anyone have the Surface 3 12inchs and use it to do web design and drawing and like it?

6 months for you to decide?

With the latest Surface, it is a laptop replacement, meaning you can change the RAM and stuff.

Hum i said in the original post that i was looking to buy one in the next 4 months or so. I'm not in a hurry at all.

Lenovo Yoga is really nice, but no digitizer

It absolutely needs to have a good digitizer. The reason i'm buying a new one is to not have to carry my wacom gfx tablet with me.

Pro 3 without a doubt. Definitely works fine as a laptop, although it can be a pain in the ass to use on your lap, but if you can find any almost flat surface, you can make it work.

12 inch device with a digitizer that works better than the Wacom pen in the model preceding it. Pressure sensitivity is good, palm rejection is perfect. I haven't used it much in Photoshop though, so I'm unsure how it handles it.

I use it for developing in Visual Studio doing ASP and such. I don't do much "design" so much as code. I find it to be great for everything I need. I get a full day out of the battery and I really like the display on it for reading.

Only other device I would recommend is the Lenovo Yoga range, but no digitizer. There's really nothing else out there that supports a pen.

Hello,

I think that in a situation where you're going to be using the tablet directly for drawing that it's a good idea to try one out in a store. I was looking here on Microsoft's web site and did not see any listings for stores in Quebec, but perhaps there is a local store where you can try one out (FutureShop?). You can always purchase it elsewhere.

The only thing I'm not too fond of with the Surface series is the keyboard (I have a Surface Pro 2, BTW). I prefer using a Lenovo Bluetooth Keyboard with mine as I prefer using a TrackPoint for navigation. That may not be an issue for you.

Nah sadly i went to future shop/best buy and they don't have any good drawing apps on the surface for me to try it. And yeah sadly we don't have any Ms store here not even one in Montr?al one of the biggest city in the whole north america.

I'll try to find a portable version of Krita and bring it on usb storage to see if i can try it this way.

Surface Pro 3 is a good option, however, the keyboard is not a pleasant experience for extended periods of time (especially for someone who likes key travel)
