Red Light flashing on motherboard

Recommended Posts

Hey all. Right short story straight. Brought new pc case. Transfered everything to new case and nothing turned on. Just red flashing light on the motherboard. Tried taking memory out. Using one stick. Took out motherboard battery. Nothing. So what I did was put everthing back in my old case and all worked. Then again I then tried new case again and guess what nothing turned on. What does red flashing light mean.? My board is Foxconn P35a. Thanks.

It means there's a problem. Check the motherboard owner's manual to see what it is. Different motherboards might have a different order or placement of red lights. If it works in the old case it might be that you did not properly connect the new case power/reset switches etc to the mb. Check the case and motherboard owner's manuals to see how to properly connect them together.

Usually there's 4 lights and it is something like this :

1st light : cpu problem.

2nd light : ram pproblem.

3rd light : gpu problem (Xbox 360 RRoD).

4th light : system/hdd problem.

Most likely, it is shorting out the board because there is an un-needed riser on back.

Also, did you connect the power button correctly? Try turning it on with just a flathead screwdriver. Touching the 2 pins that turn on the system.

Also, make sure you put 24-pin, 4/8-pin, and GFX 6-pin together.

Sorry to sound abit dumb. What is riser on back. Also how do I do this touch pin thing to turn on? Yep everything is where it's suppose to be. It all works in my old case just this case doesn't want to work :(

The light is for sure not a diag light, that motherboard does not have one.

Is the 8pin connector connected from the power supply to the motherboard? Are you using standoff's on the motherboard so it isn't hitting anything on the back side and shorting?

She's dead, Jim.

That doesn't mean it's dead, just that there's a fault in the system.

From the lack of due diligence in checking the manufactures page for a manual, or digging on the one you received with your motherboard, I'm thinking you should have taken it to Best Buy (or equivalent) to get the hardware transferred.

It just amazes me sometimes (or not) when the answer is just a few Google clicks away...

Everything is connected how it should be. As I said it all works in my old case when I put it back just my old case looks old and slightly broken. Hence new case. Tired that screwdriver trick with fail... I've tried google..first thing I did before heading here. The red light is flashing not idle... and it flashes near the connectors for power, reset, etc.

Hello,

Try the following:

  • Disassemble the unit again.
  • In the new case, remove all of the motherboard standoffs (usually brass-looking posts with hexagonal bodies).
  • Examine the Foxconn P35A motherboard to determine where the motherboard mounting screw holes that go through the board are located. (I counted nine from lookiing at the pictures in the manual).
  • Install the nine motherboard standoffs into the new case where they match up to the locations of the motherboard mounting screw holes of the Foxconn P35A motherobard.  You should not need to use a hex driver or wrench to tight them--by hand should be fine.
  • Now, very carefully, slide the Foxcon P35A motherboard into the new case, lining it up so the connectors on rear of the motherboard slide through the ATX shield installed in the new case.
  • At this point, carefully verify all of the motherboard mounting screw holes have a motherboard standoff beneath them.  There should be no additional motherboard standoffs installed in the new case, nor should there be any motherboard mounting screw holes without a motherboard beneath them.

At this point, you should screw the motherboard down into the chassis, wire things up, taking care to ensure the ATX connectors from the power supply are properly attached to the motherboard at the 24-pin ATX power connector (PWR1) and the 8-pin ATX 12V Power Connector (PWR2) as well as the front panel connectors , and apply power to the system to see if it goes through POST tests and powers up.  At this point, you hopefully shan't see any red flashing LEDs on the board, just the green LED, or whatever signal/combination on the motherboard denotes a PWR GOOD/POST passed setting.

Regards,
