convince me to switch :D

Recommended Posts

I've been a long windows user and never thought of getting a macbook because of their price, but now pc's tend to be expensive as well (my T440p). I want something thinner yet powerful than my T440p. It's 5 months old and willing to sell it.

It turns out that I always look for higher spec and than I actually need. All I do is research, right papers, study, excel, powerpoint, play around with programming languages (i'm not a programmer). I don't know why I got the nvidiat 730 and I don't game.

Worth it?

If you use Microsoft Office a lot day to day then then maybe not. Although Mac does have its own version, in my experience and others have said, its not as good as the Windows variant. Take from that what you will though, your experiences may vary.

Also what programming languages? If you do anything .Net related (C# / VB) in Visual Studio, then definitely no.

I don't program, just explore. I willing to use parallels and install win 8.1 if I needed all the functionality of office.

Convincing ... hmm. I don't think I can convince you with words but only say that I'm a happy Mac user going on for 10+ years. I found my place - I do have a PC but that sits idle. Essentially shut down.

There's a great amount of software available - Xcode is a great programming software that might have you using it - even though just to dabble in. I'm not of the persuasion that Office for the Mac is no good. I'm not a user of it myself though since I have the free package from Apple with Pages, Numbers and Keynote - I'm just expressing an opinion. And there's always the free LibreOffice if those 3 apps from Apple doesn't work.

For research I think you can be as productive as with apps on a Windows machine - Do you use any current programs for research(by name) on Windows that you would like to have an alternative for? Perhaps I can help. Or someone else can.

Also, don't be scared of the Mac App Store. It does have very good free apps that you could benefit from - Evernote for instance.

Seems a bit backward to me. If you do switch it should be because you want the OS as well. You shouldn't be running Windows in a VM for your dailly work just so you can have Apple hardware.

Also you said you wanted an even more powerful machine - why? You already have quite a good machine and you don't seem to be doing anything intensive. Why are you wanting something even more powerful when you said yourself you don't make use of it?

I might have not worded clearly. I meant that I tend to get a high spec pc when i don't actually need/use it. If I'm righting a paper, I'll use word or mac equivalent, if a ppt presentation Ill use mac equivalent as well. I'm not that intense in using these apps, and not on a daily basis. To add, I like OneNote, use it a lot, and it's available for mac.

I actually like the OS, I liked it since i did a "hackintosh" long time ago. I respect the OS (unix-based), but never really respected the company. :p

If cost is your main issue, (and assuming it's not running 8.1) wouldn't it be cheaper for you to simply buy 8.1 for it?

(it's what I would do) and it's not like it's an end of life laptop

I would say go for it, but: wait until after the WWDC keynote at least - chances are Apple will announce a hardware refresh for the Macbook Pro.

What you should avoid is going for a cheap Wintel laptop as suggested by the post above me.

When is the keynote? Current macbooks are sold at my university for $100 off, so I don't know if they'll have refreshed macbooks. Besides, the new macbooks would be very expensive when they come out, no?

I assume you're PG/RA? If so, you can use your university's regular Apple discount which is ~12-15% depending on the model. On most machines, it's far more than $100!

I'm really confused. You want to switch. You need higher specs. You don't game. You do office stuff. PCs are too expensive.

Something about your thinking doesn't add up...

I'm a grad student in Canada. Don't know if Apple has a special offer for us.

I want to switch.

I don't need higher specs. (except at least 8gb ram)

I don't game.

I do office stuff, but I want to use OSX.

Then switch. Get a 15-inch MBP. Enough power, and good portability. Buy the minimum RAM (on older models), go to Newegg, and get RAM there. Buy Office for Mac.

I'm leaning towards the 13", more portability. I thought I cannot upgrade the ram on the newer (retina) macbooks?

Yes, sorry. It?s only on older models, and 13-in non retina MBP.

Get the T440s - lovely machine.

(This coming from a Mac user at home\IT Professional at work using Windows).

This is kinda ironic, considering we were discussing the T440 in a thread in HH - talking about how the T430 was better.

I prefer windows for a desktop machine, but for a laptop I got a mac recently and now hands down prefer them for a laptop. The touchpad is *far* better than any windows laptop I've ever used (not just the hardware, but the osx driver/support. it all works so seamlessly, the system wide smooth scrolling, gestures etc.. touchpads always feel so half assed in windows)
