Could someone please help me with an Xbox 360 Slim hard drive issue?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I will try to summarize.

I have a 13 month old Xbox Slim, it is not used for gaming- strictly only for the apps like hulu, netflix, nbc, etc. I have not added any memory, it only has the 4GB internal hard drive that it comes with. Has had no damage, it's treated perfectly and never disturbed. It was working perfectly yesterday morning, then when we turned it on last night it said to download an update. After selecting yes, it stopped the download and said I didn't have enough storage.

However, when I went to adjust the storage, I had been logged out and our profile is gone. Actually everything is gone, it's blank like when we first bought it. It will not allow me to log in or create a new profile. The internet connection is perfect. I have attempted to format but it did nothing. It shows 742MB free, yet everything says 0KB used.

On the Microsoft website, I talked to a live chat ambassador and they said "sounds like your hard drive is corrupt" and then they logged off. Didn't get a chance to ask them questions.

Could someone please answer some questions? Google is confusing me lol.

Okay- if this is my 4GB hard drive going bad, what are the options to fix this myself? Can the Internal one be replaced? Is that the same thing as an HDD? If I can't replace it, will adding the external hard drive (like the 120GB one) fix the issue or does it have to have the internal one functioning?

Thank you in advance to anyone's input!

The 4GB model doesn't come with a hard drive, the 4GB is internal memory. The hard drive bay is located on the bottom, yours should be empty I think. You really shouldn't need a hard drive for just Netflix and things like that though; sounds like something else may have gone wrong. Is it still under warranty? I would try to get in touch with another Microsoft support person. That was really rude of them to just log off on you like that.

Do you have any USB flash drives you can plug into it and try? Perhaps the internal memory card has gone bad.

Guessing it's not under warranty because more than a year? Sounds like the update process glitched your console and caused a removal of your account. You can recover your gamertag in the sign in window if i remember correctly, otherwise just Google Xbox 360 recover account or Xbox 360 recover gamertag. Did this just happen over the last 24 hours? Did you get error 0x8015190A? It seems XBL is having problems with accounts on Xbox 360, so this might have caused the glitch. Otherwise i don't know, and it's very weird, that 4GB is just a flash module, it's not a hard drive so it's quite resilient.

Bonfire- I will definitely try to call them tomorrow, the phone support was closed today so I that's why I tried the chat. Also, I have a flash drive that I could use- what exactly do I do with it to test? I apologize for the ignorance but I truly am not a techy lol.

Neo- you're right, the warranty ended last month of course LOL. As far as recovering the gamertag- that's what I tried to do, I went to sign in/out, and the profiles were empty- I chose to use existing name and it just loops back to the same screen like NOPE. Same thing when I try to create a new profile. It gives me hope that you guys think this is but a hard drive issue (and yes it's empty)..... But Dangit I hope it's a fixable glitch and not something they're going to say "pay for the repair and send it in". Oh and the error I received was the one that says "test network settings". However, the network tests perfectly fine up until it gets to xbox connection (because it lacks the profile info)

Ok so I'm going now to google recover gamer tag....

This info may help-

Ok it seems to be caught in a loop. When I turn the console on, it says I must download the update or unable to sign in to XBOX live. However, it says I don't have enough storage. But because I won't update, it won't let me log in to make storage room. Hope that makes sense

Xbox members, are you receiving a ?0x8015190A? error code when attempting to recover your account on a different device? As you read this message, we?re working hard to fix this issue right away. Thanks for your patience in the meantime. We?ll update you again when we have more information.

I'd say give it a few hours or wait until tomorrow, do a hard reset of the console (power down for two minutes, disconnect all cables, then boot up). My hunch is it will clear up. There's really nothing to mess up on your console as it has no hard drive and that flash can be easily re-written, it's not very likely to corrupt. Worst case scenario is your account got glitched on Microsoft's end, which is dismaying and annoying, but could happen. You will need to contact them again. I know how you feel, this is very frustrating and sad, as you just want to enjoy yourself and and the services you are used to enjoying.

Thank you! Ok then I'm going to leave it alone tonight, unplug it all, and restart it tomorrow.

I have a feeling that's not the problem but I'm willing to try it.

Only because that error code is different, and it's been this way for over 24 hours, and I'm not signing in from a different device.

It seems to me the problem is that it won't let me update because of the storage, and won't let me login to manage storage because I haven't updated- like some crazy loop and I hope they have a solution when I call tomorrow.

But THANK YALL tons, because of your answers I won't be wasting money on a hard drive tonight from amazon :)

Just plug it in and go to the storage manager, it should show up there. If it works try the update again. It sounds to me like either the update has screwed things up somehow or your onboard flash memory card has failed (it isn't common but if that is the case it isn't too serious as they are rather cheap to replace). Hopefully it is just something simple though. Maybe when you call tomorrow they will know. Good luck with it :)

To use a flash drive, connect it to the console then navigate to the System Prefs menu and format it in the storage section. Back up anything on the drive before you do this because it'll wipe the drive during the process. Full walkthrough here.

Alternaitvely you can download the update from Xbox.com and update using USB. The instructions are here:

Copy to a USB flash drive

If you cannot connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet, you can copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive and then install it on the console.

Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.

  1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Download the update file.
  3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  4. Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your flash drive.
  6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
  7. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
  8. Restart the console.
  9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.

The profile issue may be separate as Neo said and compounding the problem. If you can't progress with an update, try disconnecting the console from the network and using the USB update.

Another option would be to clear the cache if the download became corrupt in anyway.

Let us know how you get on and I'll provide some more suggestions if those don't work.

Keep us posted, as Andrew noted clearing the cache never hurts on a 360 as well!

Step was referring to the actual Live Chat reps, not the forum ambassadors...those Live Chat people can be weird to interact with, though eventually they get the job done.
