The Biggest Phone Revolution For This Year

Recommended Posts

For me, it's the G3 based solely on audio performance :p  Though i'm anxiously awaiting to see what microsoft has up their sleeve as I just love the sleekness of the OS for windows Phone.

I wonder a rebrand of what phone will the N6 be? (LG or samsung?)

None of them will be involved for this one. There is a rumor Motorola will be involved instead

Didn't google say there won't be a Nexus device?

I don't think its officially been annouced, there are still rumours about it releasing this year. I really hope it does come, I love my Nexus 4 and hate the idea of paying ?500+ for a Samsung handset. I'm sure there are other cheaper alternatives out there but the Nexus just seemed to get it so perfectly balanced.

Lumia 1020 was last year, right? Because that camera was somewhat of a revolution in imaging.

So, maybe a Lumia 1030, slimmer, more powerful, lose the camera hump.

Depends what you mean by something being revolutionary. I don't think there will be anything that changes the game this year.

Looked good until I read....

  • XiaoMi UI (Android 4.2 as underlying operating system)

I'm really not a big fan of companies putting their own bloatware over the top of the usual OS, part of the reason I went for the Nexus. I know Google have the whole Silver edition stuff lined up so if I have to I'll get one of those but for now I'm perfectly happy with the N4. Not looking to upgrade anytime soon.

For me the biggest revolution in mobile phones has been price, you can now pickup a smartphone which is really capable for not much money at all, it blows my mind.

I have a Motorola G and Nokia 625, both are really fast and powerful and can do anything the other phones can do. Alright the camera's on them ain't brillant but the 625 cost ?89 and the Moto G cost ?150 when i got it. Moto G is running 4.4.2, never had a slow down or problem with it and im just waiting for 8.1 for my 625.

I expect to see even more functionality and price drops in the future, the CTO from ARM stated that he expected to see a $20 smart phone at some point and with drops like these i don't think he's going to be far off the mark.

From apple im not sure, it will either just be a bigger screen or they might just have that one last thing.

Xiaomi has released 4.4.2 update for it. I think Xiaomi also supports installation of CM11 on it.

The only drawback is no LTE.

In all honesty I just prefer vanialla Android, I've never tried custom roms etc but I always just expect it to be the same as any other mod. It adds nice things but also takes the stability down a tad.

LTE isn't a big deal as I have a company SIM which is 3G only anyway.

From a technological point of view smartphone development has entered the evolutionary phase. Screen sizes have reached a sweet spot at around 5"; CPUs are more than fast enough for whatever you throw at them; you can't make the phones much thinner without sacrificing battery life. Similarly all of the smartphone OSs have reached a point of being feature complete - at this point it's just gradual evolution.

As has been noted before the price for smartphones are the next true revolution. Who would only two years ago have dreamt of affordable yet powerful phones like the Moto G?
