Reinstalled windows serious errors

Question

I reinstalled windows and all has not gone well.Everything seems to be working except sometimes I get an error like could not make exception for program otr something like that. Also after leaving a game my pc restarted by itself.

When a boot my pc I have options for booting of windows xp or running xp recovery I thought that was strange and I see even though the windows cd is not in the drive it has the logo of the windows cd.Can the pc think the windows cd is still in the drive?

What does xp recovery actually do is there some repair tool I can use after my anit virus has removed some of the virusses I might have?

You did a clean (format of drive C:) install of Win XP? Formatting the C drive should remove all of the viruses. Doesn't sound like that's the case though. If you have viruses, and you don't want to lose the data on your harddrive, you will need to remove the virus infections completely first.

Cant some nasty viruses survive a format?

sounds as bad as windows xp can be ... for your own good i just hope you dont have had any critical/important data stored on that hd?

i think there is no safe way to install windows xp anymore, except using a pre-patched winxp dvd with all service packs and security updates included.

If you are still running Windows XP in 2014, maybe it's time to buy a new computer with a more up to date OS on it.

The amount of updating you will have to do on your freshly installed XP will take forever.

This. Feel bad for you though, and I understand. Try to dban that c before you reinstall, would be my advice. That way you know for sure it's clean. Good luck to you.

Actually if you install a slipstreamed  version of Sp3 all the XP updates install MUCH faster than on Vista and 7 / 8. So won't take very long at all.

If you run a format c: /p:1 This will write zeros on every sector. I'm no virus expert but this will overwrite any data on the partition including virus.

During the installation, just delete the partition, then have it format drive.

Just backup your data first.

Not much malware will survive that. Definitely not 22 instances.

I have personally never come across one that will hang around after that. I quick format is actually just "deleting" the data, marking it as gone, but it's really not. A format is a little better than quick format, but still leaves data on the drive. That being said, no malware would be detected and requires recovery software to see anything.

Do the DBAN if you're really paranoid. This is what I use: http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm
