PS4 system update news coming 'very soon'

Recommended Posts

Sony plans to announce details of a future PS4 firmware update "very soon", European PS Blog manager Fred Dutton has teased.

Responding to fans asking for information on when further system updates would be revealed, Dutton confirmed: "Yes, more news on PS4 firmware updates very soon. Stay tuned."

Dutton later added that he couldn't confirm when details would be released, but reiterated to fans to expect more info "soon".

Sony has been criticised by some fans for its sluggish approach to PS4 firmware updates, particularly when compared to Microsoft's monthly strategy for Xbox One.

The latest major PS4 system update launched at the end of April introducing SHAREfactory, a USB export option for screenshots and video and the option to disable HDCP.

Seems to be around the time Microsoft announces theirs. But given Sonys track record I am predicting it will by a tiny point release with nothing more than 'software stability' in the changelog.

What are some of the features that the PS4 should have? CD playback? MP3 compatibility? DLNA? Might be stuff like that?

DLNA would be good.  Primarily I would just like to see a lot of the features they announced when they first announced the console. Like suspend mode, 1-1 game streaming (not the twitch/ustream thing there at the moment), controller share, there's loads that never made it into the console even this far after launch.

I wouldn't mind 4K video playback.

Although we know 4K gaming is completely out of the question it is perfectly feasible they could enable support for HEVC 4K video playback from Netflix.

Unless it has a HEVC decoder built in I can't see that happening, 4k H.264 is ok if you have the right hardware, but HEVC is much more resource intensive.

Maybe its GPU would be up to the task with a software codec if it is just being used for Netflix?  I read somewhere that Netflix said it was technically possible for them to stream 4k to the PS4 but it would be up to Sony to implement it. How true that is I don't know though, but it would be good.

How much do these things crash with the only updates seemingly being stability updates

Bit ridiculous if you ask me, what is their software team doing?

That's not the update the PlayStation EU blog was referring to.  The 1.8 release is supposed to some out around Gamescom (which runs Aug. 14-17) and is supposed to contain "media features"... some of which they say the PS3 already does, others not.  So there is a lot of speculation on what that actually means.  In any event it should be out in under a month so hopefully Sony will give an official heads up with what it is going to contain sometime soon.

I have a feeling that one of those media features will be proper 3D Bluray support.

Otherwise, DLNA would be awesome, along with a revamped audio and video player (with decent format support).  Beyond media, there are a number of UI tweaks that would be nice to see.

As far as stability improvements, some of the apps could certainly use it. I'm looking forward to a robust update with 1.8.

I'm not too sure how versioning works but if it the update really contains a lot of media features then shouldn't they call it version 2 rather than 1.8?

I don't know, 1.7 was a pretty big update and it was only a .1 release.  We're less then a year into the life of a product that is supposed to last like 7-10 years so I doubt they want to be churning through the whole numbers.  I think .1 releases are feature adds and .01 releases are bug fixes.  I suspect 2.0 is just going to be the feature add that comes after 1.9 not something epic but who knows.  It hasn't been officially announced yet so maybe it will be 2.0 but speculation seems to be leaning toward a 1.8 release.

i get a kick out of these announcements that they are going to announce something at a later date.

on a side note DLNA support would be nice (or an official plex app)

I feel like this is becoming the new norm for lots of tech companies.  Hey lets send out an announcement about something we are going to announce soon!

I'm not sure what you mean? It's not like Sony issued a press release saying an announcement was coming. Someone posted in the comments on the official EU blog asking if there was an update coming now that MS announced they were adding 3D blu-ray support to the Xbox One. The official blog rep (Fred Dutton) then basically just responded that he can't say anything yet but expect an announcement soon. When pressed "soon" turned into around the Gamescom timeframe.

As to the specifics of the update most of the information has been leaked from twitter @tidux who is apparently a pretty reliable leaker (has contacts inside Sony?). This is no different from the the leaks we get of new smart phones before the official announcements or the leaks for the new Start Menu for Windows 9 and such and isn't anything new. Heck there were probably leaks of the features of Win95 before the official announcement.

I don't know, if I had a choice I'd rather be the company that sells more and patches less over the company that patches more and sells less. Maybe that's just me though.

No argument there.

how is that even relevant? Firmware patches have nothing to do with sales. It's not like PS4 was feature rich at launch. It was lacking considerably compared to its predecessor (just like XB1).

I would rather buy a console which is supported/updated properly instead of just "stability improvements".

They hastily declared 3D BD support "coming soon" only after Microsoft announced July update. Curious timing? I think so.
