Good, low profile microphone?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently using a Blue Yeti, and the thing is amazing. However, it is big and bulky. I'm aiming to hide wires and peripherals the best I can and this mic needs to go. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need small or sleek, while still being good quality. I would idealy like it to be mountable to the wall or something.

I don't know if something like it is available separately, but I replaced my older "boom" Memorex/Telex microphone with the beamforming display-mountable mic that comes with Creative's PCI-Express SoundCore3D sound cards (X-Fi Titanium/Recon3D and later - including the entire Sound Blaster Z line).  The darn thing is "little" - maybe an inch and a half long at most, and supremely skinny; it tapes to any monitor.  Due to the black color, it practically poofs with a black bezel.  And I use it as my default for any application that supports external microphones - including Skype; the beamforming technology definitely gets the job done.  And it uses the same-size mini-audio-input jacks that are typical for microphones for computer use - in other words, it's a direct replacement.

If you have a display-mounted camera (either a clip-on sort or built-in), you can mount the mic directly below it (clip-ons) or directly above it (built-in).

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with my camera. My monitor is mounted so close to the wall that I can't put the camera on it anymore. There is roughly 1/2" between the wall and the back of the monitor.

I may be out of luck it seems. The snowball is larger than I was hoping, and when I do use headphones, I use Logitech G35, which already have a mic in them.

What I'm looking for needs to be slim. Maybe the size of your thumb. Unless you have fat, yeti sized thumbs.

Here are pics of the side showing the depth. I really don't have much room to work with.

xplatinum, that could work. However those microphones are designed to be near your face. I would mount it to the back of my monitor with the boom just barely above the monitor. How bad would it pick up audio at a 2-3 foot distance?

If it's a flat-panel, use a clip-on mount - most modern cameras include them for precisely this mounting option.  (The bigger surprise was that my Communicate STX had the option - and it predated the Rise of the Flat-Panel by a few years.).

However, it's about time that my STX retires - the one flaw it has is non-support for OS X beyond Leopard.  (I'm looking at one of four cameras that are in the right price range that are absolutely plug-in replacements that are supported by any OS under the moon, not merely the sun.  Two from Logitech (C-515 and C-625; the 625 superceded the 515)) and two from Microsoft (LifeCam and LifeCam Studio).  I don't need fancy - however, I DO need solid Skype and Facetime support, and without costing a mint.  (Fortunately, even the highest-priced of the four is $70USD - off-sale and brick and mortar.)

Its a Logitech C920, and believe it or not, it is too deep to rest on top of the monitor without hitting the backsplash I mounted the monitor to.
