ATMs dispense gifts to surprised customers

Some lucky people in Canada were surprised when ATMs not only spoke to them, but also gave them gifts.

"There's a slot that's opening up," you can hear an ATM voice saying.

"Oh, my goodness. ... Never in all my life have I ever had such a wonderful surprise," the woman using the ATM said.

The video has only been up for a week and already has well over 3 million views, which is a great way to get the company noticed -- and we're sure that was the goal.

"Don't you wish it were here," one news anchor asked.

"Yeah, if you're in the CNN center, it demands $3 so you can get $40. ... So yeah, that's fantastic," another joked.

Marketing Magazine reports TD Canada Trust just wanted to say "thank you" in a big way. TD's Senior Vice President for Corporate Marketing Chris Stamper told them:

"The views are great. ... but when it comes down to it, it's really about making an authentic connection with your customers," he said.

The ATMS, or "Automated Thanking Machines," were set up in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.

Mashable explains that the company asked employees from its different branches to choose their favorite customer to receive a surprise gift. Twenty people were pre-selected. Stamper wrote to Mashable about the chosen customers, saying some "have been through tough times, and some are just wonderfully kind and caring people."

There were 40 others who weren't selected by employees but were lucky enough to encounter a thanking machine -- and some of the gifts were bigger than that vase of flowers seen earlier. One person the video highlighted was a mother whose only daughter has cancer and lives in Trinidad.

The daughter just underwent an operation earlier in the week, and TD Canada Trust gave the mother tickets to visit her.

TD Canada also owns TD Bank, NA and investment bank TD Ameritrade here in the United States; no idea if their Automated Thanking Machines will appear here yet.
