Sony Condemns PlayStation Home To Closure In Japan

Recommended Posts

Update: Fear not Home-dwellers in Europe and North America. Your virtual avatar and domicile are safe., according to Sony. Excerpt]

"PS Home will only terminate in Japan and Asian regions/countries," a PlayStation representative told us via email. "PS Home in SCEA and SCEE operates independently, so this announcement does not apply to the service in those territories."

Original Story:

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced the imminent closure of the PlayStation Home service in Asian territories. The service, which entered beta testing in 2008, will be sunset in March 2015. No items will be sold after September 24, 2014.

PlayStation Home was Sony?s attempt to recreate the success of Second Life on the PlayStation 3. The service is free, but cosmetic items for avatars and housing are provided at a cost.

Regions within Home are modeled after PlayStation games, including Sully?s Bar for Uncharted, the LittleBigPlanet Playground, and the Abstergo Lab from Assassin?s Creed. These include themed decor and minigames.

Sony has used Home as a broadcast location for its press conferences and special events. We?ve inquired with the publisher to see if there are plans to sunset the service in Europe and North America.

Our Take

I visited Home a couple of times in its early days and I never understood the appeal. I imagine there are some that will mourn its passing, but for me, it?s just a passing oddity.

PS Home. That thing still around?

Yep, I actually went back on it this week, albeit just to grab a couple free PS1 games through the PS4 Experience space: Warhawk and Twisted Metal.  For unknown reasons, Americans also get Destruction Derby on top of those two, but I've still got my copy of DD2, so no biggie.

If anyone's interested, here's how you do it.

Do you need to use a US PSN account & their version of Home?

Nope, I used my UK account on the same version of Home. To be honest, it's been so long since I used the American and Japanese accounts I set up, I completely forgot about that. :P Could probably use that to grab Destruction Derby, but I don't mind missing out on that one.

Looks like it's currently bugged. When you go back to the Vita for its second sparkle it brings up the message but no card. Then all the subsequent sparkles don't activate.

Will try a 3rd time and leave that one til last.

Edit: can't even start the quest at all now :/

Oh yeah, it bugged on me before after I touched the PS Vita sparkle; wouldn't let me touch the glowing goo one. I went to one of my home spaces, then back in and it all worked fine after that (it remembers your progress, so you don't have to do it all again).

How I once defended home *shudder*

It had its moments :p but it was never going to live up to the promises they made.

I can't believe it still has the beta tag on its death bed though
