Google Search Keeps Disappearing?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've noticed this a couple of times now, and I can't seem to figure out what is happening.

On my S4 I have installed a custom ROM, Imperium v10.0. It turns out that Google Search/Google Now isn't installed by default on the ROM, or at least it isn't as far as I can see. As such, I went on to the Google Play store and found the app and launcher. This already raises a small alarm bell for me, as I can't understand why I would need to have a Google Search app as well as a Google Now Launcher app.

Anyway, the Google Now Launcher app is always under my app drawer. However, every now and again when I click on it to launch Google Now, I get told that in order to use it I need to download Google Search - something that I had already downloaded. Sure enough, when I go to the Play store, I don't get an option to update Google Search, instead I get told that I can install it; i.e. the app is not on my phone already.

Now I understand that because I'm using a custom ROM there could be all sorts of explanations for why this is happening. Maybe I should reflash the ROM and see if there are any options under the installation steps to install Google stuff (I seem to remember there might have been such an option.) But before I try that, I was just wondering if anyone else had any suggestions or any explanation as to why the Google Search app seems to keep uninstalling itself.

Cheers all. (Y)

Hello,

I believe the Google Search app is a requirement for the Google Now launcher, so that shouldn't be a concern.

It seems that there is an issue with the validation of the Google Search app, especially if it was sideloaded and installed with the Package Manager instead of verified and installed with Google Play.

I suggest deleting the search app and re-installing it using the launcher. If that doesn't work, then delete both the launcher and the search app and download them again. For added security, disable third party apps from the Settings menu. If this doesn't work, it means the ROM may need to be reinstalled.

Its worth doing a full back-up of your device in all cases. This includes further precautions such as removing SD cards and such.

Regards,

Steven Johns
