Threw my back out?

One of the most painful things I've ever experienced happened last night. I was sitting in my chair, and I lean down to pick something up off the floor in a routine fashion, and all of the sudden, I feel a rush of pain travel up and town from my lower back. I immediately try to get up and lay down in bed, but the pain is horrible, to the point where my entire body is trembling. Every little movement I make is just full of horrible pain. I've tried to sleep it off, which I did for a few hours, but every time I try to even move around bed, it's excruciating. I can hardly walk without holding onto things.

 

I have no idea what I did, other than just bend too far, I guess. I'm 25, but in the past few weeks, I've hurt my knee running a 5k, and then proceeded to hurt my shoulder and neck mysteriously. I'm getting old. :/

 

Thankfully, this happened on a long weekend, otherwise, I would definitely be unable to work today. Aside from rest and painkillers, anyone have any tips to mitigate the pain?

Lay face down on your bed, hold your legs, bent up at the knees.

 

If your feel comfortable to do so, slightly swing your legs, forward and back.

 

Give yourself suggestions that the pain is easing, going away.

 

You might want to see a chiropractor, but don't let him rope you into endless treatments.

 

You should probably see a regular doctor to find out if there is some serious problem.

Just skip "chiropractor" all together.  and go see a certified osteopath

 

 

other then that... just relax.. and put your own hands on your back. funny enough, your own hands can provide comfort and relax the area better then any massage would.  just hold them there. and try to think positive relaxing thoughts.

again, funny enough, but this actually WORKS.   the human body is a very complicated mechanism.    just by mentally believing something is happening, activates different processes, that can possibly help to make it true.

If it's anything close to serious, a chiropractor will not even touch you, at least not if he's an honest one! An x-ray will probably not find anything. It took a CT scan for them to find my buldging and fractured discs! Go see a real doctor!!

 

I screwed my back up 4 years ago just reaching for the door knob to get in my house. Am now totally disabled.

 

25 IS NOT even remotely close to old either. Heck, you're just a kid who's wet behind the ears still!

... this is only a half joke suggestion.    i was suffering immensely after a shuttered bone, and prescribed painkillers did not do much. it still hurt like hell.   a few drinks would take the pain away much much better then opioids !

seriously? disabled?     i am so sorry...   really am.  i had back problems before, and i know that spine connects to everything!  but disabled?

 

i know this does not mean much.... but please accept my condolences

I'm feeling a bit better this afternoon, but still in a bit of pain. I can walk better now, but still think I should take things easy for a while.

Just rest up. The vast majority of episodes of back pain will subside on their own within 4-6 weeks, as long as you rest properly. That means avoiding bending, twisting, or putting vertical loads on your back. 

 

If it lasts longer than 6 weeks then you should go see a doctor.

When I hurt my lower back bed rest made it worse: it became stiff and sore and I had shooting pain every-so-often. I found moving around, slowly, was much better and only sitting or lying down for short periods with a heat pack helped.

 

I also took some voltaren which obviously helped alleviate the pain.

 

If it doesn't clear up itself ~48hrs go to a doctor. Preferably a real doctor, not a quack alt. medicine man.

 

Good luck. I know back pain is terrible, the pain is one thing but the way it screws up your mobility might be even worse. I wish you a speedy recovery, and if you're anything like me this will teach you to take more care when bending, lifting, twisting etc. your back.

Do this:  According to my doctor this takes the pressure off of the spine.

I have been in bed since Wednesday with sciatica.  Pain shoots from my lower back down my right leg.  When it spasms it feels like someone is shoving a cattle prod in my back.  Not fun!
