Thinking of switching to a S4 from a LG-G2

Recommended Posts

I've had my LG G2 for about 11 months now and love the phone. The two issues that are starting to bug me are -- lack of removable battery and that a lot of the LCD's seem to be frying on KitKat 4.4, which doesn't bode well, thus I've remained on 4.2.2 as it's been pretty much trouble free for me.

Although I loved the LG G2 battery life when I first got the phone (I could easily go 2 full days with about 15% to spare), I'm finding I'm down to around 45% life after one day, meaning I usually need to charge it at night, or make sure I'm near a charger the 2nd day. Not to mention, if I'm out during the day and end up using my phone a ton (Hiking, using the GPS, hotspot, etc), I don't have an easy way to recharge it. Although this hasn't been *too* bad, there's been a few times where I've gotten really sticky and gotten home with 5-6% left.

I figure the LG G2 - Galaxy S4 would be a reasonably fair trade on the open market -- and I'd get a 32GB SD card for the S4 as well. Anyone have both? I know the S4 has the 600 series CPU instead of the 800, but I really don't game that much on my phone. Just stupid piddling here and there.

Thoughts? I know I'd get a Qi charger ASAP as I love wireless charging on my LG G2

Careful, confirm the exact model for the S4 as  there are 3 variants,  SD 600, SD 800 (LTEA version) and Exynos Octa-Core for international version.

Also note, the UI on touchwiz is extremely laggy on the S4 (any version) LG G2 on kit kat has toned down the amount of bloat, so it's not just games...

A couple of personal issues i'd like to bring up, that are widespread for the s4

The proximity sensor is builtin with the ear piece, meaning any dust that gets in the ear piece, will get to the proximity sensor and eventually end up blocking it, you will need to take it apart and blow it clean or swipe it clean (easily done).

Sensor hub will malfunction to to humidity and gives a false reading, again, easily cleaned with IPA.

Dropped my phone, once... the front camera BROKE. nothing else, not a single scratch, but somehow  the innards of the front camera busted, again easily replaceable for $5.

Then don't get me to comment on the build quality...

I bought the S4 exynos version, because it comes with a wolfson dac (Separate audio processor) and not  built in like the snap dragon version.

Needless to Say i'm NEVER buying samsung until they up their ante in build quality.

All these issues i've delt with and came up after around a year of usage.

Not to go more into detail on touchwize, but it severely hinders performance... on Custom roms, ONLY the SD 600 has widespread support for custom roms and flashing, the exynos build is way to buggy and the SD800 is basically non existant.

That said, I do love the audio quality and the screen is amazing, but samsung need to up their game.

You said you hike a lot and are constantly on the go, I'd be worried about the dust issue in that case, as I too am all over the place and as a result...

the other issues are basically a hit and miss.

Thanks for the response!

I always get a TPU case for my phones and a screen protector. Not that I've *never* dropped my phones before, but on the few times that I have, the TPU cases seem to protect it.

I'd be getting the SD600 variant (Verizon). I still have unlimited LTE with them, so I'm going to milk that as much as possible.

I'd be installing a custom ROM as soon as possible

I did have a case on my phone for the majority of the time, issue is, dust goes through the front ear speaker, no way around it.  It's a heads up, if the s4 starts to going to black when dialing or receiving a call, the proximity sensors needs to be cleaned.

i've tried the SD600 on cyanogenmod, man... you'd think it's a whole different phone compared to the touchwiz variants. It wasn't until I tried another rom, that I figured out how much bloat samsung adds to the phone.

What about the LG G3, its the model up from G2 and it has a removable battery now so it can be replaced down the track and it has much improved specs and few extra features over it predecessor.

I second the motion about getting a phone with a swappable battery. Plus the G3 is a lot nicer phone IMO.

I have an LG Optimus G Pro which also has a removable battery. This is a great feature if you're a heavy user. I found several online sources of affordable OEM OGP batteries and bought a pair which I carry in an old iPhone 3GS case just in case, and they've definitely been used.
