Xbox One Exclusive Sunset Overdrive is "The Opposite of The Last of Us" says Insomniac

Speaking to GameSpot for EB Expo 2014Sunset Overdrive creative director Marcus Smith described Insomniac's upcoming colourful and bombastic Xbox One exclusive action game as being "the opposite ofThe Last of Us."

"I love The Last of Us, it's a great game," Smith went on to say. "There are games that have tried to eliminate the HUD - but a HUD is how you know a lot of information, so by removing it there's that ambiguity. For us, we embrace that there's a HUD and we call it out a lot of times and the player character will remind the player occasionally about things that are very gamey.

"It's an open world game and we have fast travel. The player [character] will remind you every once in a while--'That's really far. Good thing there's fast travel!' If Joel broke character to remind the player to pick up health or something like that, it would be a terrible experience. But in our game, everything is on the table."

Smith describes other ways Sunset Overdrive breaks the fourth wall, including respawn animations that play upon reappearing in the game world that reference other games such as Portal.

Sunset Overdrive was recently confirmed to run in 900p at 30fps. It will be available for Xbox One on October 28 in the US, and October 31 in Europe.

I pretty much have no idea why this would even have to be compared to The Last of Us  :/

Well, being that it "is the opposite of", I think they are trying to tell you that it won't be worth buying...

I guess repeating their message of "Games are taking things too seriously" from the E3 trailer.

I would assume by picking on one what is arguably one of the best games in recent times and comparing yourself you're trying to place yourself in that same place. It's nothing but clever marketing I suspect.

I'm glad someone else made the joke because that was my first thought too :P

Looking forward to the game, but as AB said, not sure why the comparison has been made at all. Using the HUD excuse was a bit of a stretch. Not like TLoU was the first to do it.

I don't get why they thought this quote was worth an article. His comments aren't insulting, and he's just repeating what's abundantly obvious. It was a reference point to say it's the opposite of a very serious game, as it's just silly.

Exactly, but once again the internet in it's craziness and in many cases stupidity will take any little thing and blow it up for no reason.    What he said isn't a lie, one is a serious game and the other isn't, we all know as much already.   Move on, nothing to see here folks.
