Not surprised. Hope nobody took Pachter seriously.

I am surprised that more Destiny hard copies were sold on Xbox One than on PS4.

were there?  That's news to me.

Yes, the order of the consoles listed after each game in the NPD list actually means something

As usual, it's worth noting that they don't count bundled sales or digital sales, but even so it's surprising to me.

Think a lot of sales will have come with the Destiny hardware bundle and digitally (PSN had pre-order bonuses), both of which aren't counted.

Pachter says PS4 over 500k, that'll be a lot of Destiny bundles.

Pachter: Yeah, people really like those white PS4s ;-)

PS4 was up by almost threefold. I?m not sure what triggered that, didn?t find the Destiny bundle that compelling (it was only a $10 discount), and the fifth week implied that sales would be up by 25%. I get that September is seasonally stronger than August, so I suppose I should have gone to 375 ? 400k, but I would never have gone to over 500k. I?m still surprised by that figure.

Keeping in mind he will be able to see the numbers now, they just aren't released publicly by NPD.

That's why I find it hard to take these numbers as even remotely important.  The retail numbers will continue decreasing in relevance to anyone but the retailers.

Add digital and only the publishers know anything.

Sony's announced that 9/14 was the biggest month in history for the PSN store, and Activision internal estimates put PS4 as the top platform for Destiny in terms of sell-through.

http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2014/10/16/sony-announces-that-september-2014-was-the-biggest-month-in-playstation-store-history/112357/

Also:

Key milestones from Destiny on PlayStation include:

?         Destiny is currently the most-played PS4 game, with total gameplay hours 5X higher than the second most-played title
?         Destiny is #1 across pre-order sales, day one sales, week one sales, and month one sales on PS Store
?         Social sharing is hugely popular among Destiny players, with 450,000 hours of live gameplay broadcasted via the PS4 system?s SHARE functionality
?         New PlayStation Plus memberships increased 115 percent from the week prior to Destiny?s launch
?         The limited-edition Destiny PS4 bundle helped drive PS4 hardware sales to its biggest month in 2014

biggest 7/10 game ever?

A random person on the street could get a higher hit rate for predictions than Pachter does. How is he still emplyed?

Also, saw that PS4 outsold all other consoles (not handhelds) combined. Crazy.

ps4 538k

xbox one 284k

wii u 87k

360 74k

ps3 46k

Makes you wonder why Microsoft isn't doing a Halo preorder bundle. Sends like they could flip this for October/November if they did.

They also seem to have a 360 problem :P

And WiiU...

I don't know if the Halo collection will be a system seller, since it's games people already have.  It might be.

Sunset Overdrive probably won't be a major deal either (because it's cheesy,) but it'll be a good start on getting important exclusives out there.  Crackdown and Tomb Raider will also be a boost whenever they show up.  And Quantum Overdrive of course.

The X1s game library is just starting to get good IMO.  I hope they can get some momentum, but I have low expectations for the rest of the year and 1H15.  We'll see.

Does anyone have figures from previous months? I'm curious to know if Microsoft are making a dent in Sony's seemingly dominant position.

Well, since the PS4 has outsold X1 nine straight months (in the US), I would say the lead is growing.  Others would have to comment, but I'd guess that PS4 is also winning months in most PAL regions aside from the UK, and is leading in Japan month to month.

Halo will make a difference, especially with the lack of exclusives for the holidays (unless for some reason the GTA V bundle is a seller).

You do realize that NPD isn't trying to inform the public, that's not the point.  They get the retail numbers for the platform holders and just happen to release some info to the public as a byproduct.  The platform holders don't need digital distribution numbers, they know how much they sell directly.  The even know how much they ship (which MS is fond of quoting) but they don't know how much of what they actually ship sells through to the public at retail... THAT is the point of the NPD numbers.  NPD actually does a great job at what they do and as long as people buy stuff at retail instead of direct from the publisher/manufacturer then their number are very important.  For hardware it will always be important (unless MS and Sony just start selling their consoles directly to the public exclusively through them) but of course they don't release the hardware numbers to the public at all (they DO give them to the platform holders though)

I think that's kinda what I said.  The info is basically useless for people trying to guess total sell through on anything but the base hardware.

PS4 is also winning in the UK, I think it had a week last month where the X1 had a spike in sales  due to a fifa15 promotion but month on month basis PS4 has been winning since they both were released.

Only place that Xbox One is leading in sales is China, but the PS4 hasn't been released there yet.

I wasn't sure about UK sales numbers so I didn't want to go there.
