Selling my computer. What can I realistically get for it?

Recommended Posts

So I want to upgrade my computer to something that wasn't made in 2011. Here are the specs.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z EATX LGA1155 Motherboard
CPU Cooler: *Corsair H10077.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
Storage: OCZ Vertex 3.20 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: OCZ Vertex 3.20 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Case: Corsair 550D ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair Professional Gold 1200W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (ax1200)
Optical Drive: LG BH16NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Video: 2x Radeon 6990 w/ ARCTIC Accelero Twin Turbo 6990

What should my asking price be for a computer like this? I have no idea what the price for a setup like this would be. Thanks :)

So, you are trying to sell a custom built computer computer that has been used for at least 3 years, has no warranty, and no one to turn to if there is any problems with it.  I personally wouldn't pay a dime over $500 for it.  Computers have little to no value left to them as time goes on.

I agree with Michael.  Custom PCs like this are worth basically nothing unless the parts are from the current generation.

The problem is that you'll have to find a buyer that is happy with the entire configuration.  If it was me, I wouldn't like the SSDs and the old ATI crossfire GPUs.  I would buy it knowing that I'd have to go through the effort of selling those parts and putting in about $300 in upgrades.  $400 would be the most I'd pay for it.

Honestly, if you want to maximize the resale value, sell all the parts separately.  Yeah it's a lot of work, but I'd be willing to bet you'll be able to get $500-600.

Yeah those OCZ ssds are EOL are they not.

And you can get a brand new crucial mx100 128GB for like $70, so those wouldn't be worth much if you ask me. How much data has been written to them, are they still under their 3 year warranty? You might be able to get like 35$ a piece for them.

That LG BH16NS40 I show for like $80 used at a few places.

You might be able to get 200-300 for that cpu.. The video cards prob be most money in that system.. What is the memory on them? 4GB ddr5? Might be able to get $400 for the pair.

Seems like a decent machine and I would sell to someone local. Trying to sell to someone outside of state will only devalue your offering. I would of bought it to replace my wife's machine.

$1330.00 I simply googled all these items and this is what I could buy each for at first glance. (in the US) You got the plus that it's already built. :)

You have to take that at half value, or 3/4 in his case. Being that all his parts are out of warranty. I wouldn't pay more than 400-500 for that.

Thanks, I was simply answering the OP's question and perhaps giving him a starting point. When you sell a thing, you don't start at a tech expert bottom dollar price. You start high and go down. Right?

Why not compare it to other similar set-ups on eBay in your area since prices of electronics vary so greatly between countries.

I have tried on kijiji.ca and on worthmonkey.com. It seems like the prices would be hovering around 1200-1400CAD

Yeah, I understand that, hence why I would like to gauge what I could realistically get for it. It is hard to find a price for it since the prices for the type of hardware I have for this computer is overinflated in today's time, or out of stock without any realistic prices.

Yeah, I had a feeling the money would be in the 6990's due to the fact hat for bitcoin mining and litecoin mining they are powerhouses in their respect. Plus on ebay the cards themselves are going anywhere between 250-500 dollars, which is a wide gap :S

yeah, they got 4gb gddr5 on the cards. as for the warranty the graphics cards wouldn't have it due to the custom cooler.

I would try, and I would only do local. Heard of too many horror stories about getting screwed without meeting the buyer in person.

Thanks for the estimate, though I have a feeling it might be a bit inflated :S

Sure, you can always go high and work your way down, but I'm the kind of guy who would like to get a realistic fair trade amount without screwing both myself or the buyer.

Your best bet would be upgrading and parting-out the older stuff.

upgrade and part-out:

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z EATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
Video: 2x Radeon 6990 w/ ARCTIC Accelero Twin Turbo 6990

keep the ssd'd as spares/storage and replace them

I don't know what some people are smoking but 6990 cards are still very good. As good as a 770. You need newer nVidia 970-980 or AMD 290x cards to have better than that and thos are 350 and up.

The 2 cards alone are worth 300-350 something without too much trouble.

You can get 70$ for the 2 ssds without any trouble you'll sell them quickly

You are already at 400$ and the cpu is not sold and old cpus don't lose value that much. People with dead cpu are not always willing to change the whole system and buy used. I wanted to upgrade my core i5 750 least years to a lynnfield i7 but the price of old i7 is so ridiculous i cancelled the project. Almost impossible to find a lynnfield i7 for less than 100$.

So we are at 500$ easily and we still have to sell the MB, case, memory (that's some good memory and 3 yo memory is still perfectly good).

Sell the system in parts you always get more this way.
