Oblivion still worth getting in 2014?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reading this post and throwing down some opinions.

I was suggested to get Fallout 3 by a friend on my PS3, which I did and was one of my all time favorite games to date.  I enjoyed it so much I bought Skyrim to curb my love for this type of genre but my PS3 died and instead of getting a PS4 (awaiting launch at the time) I invested into a gaming machine (computer).  About a month ago I noticed a Skyrim GOTY sale and I purchased it and currently just finding the last few places on the map to complete the entire experience.

Steam is now suggesting Morrow Wind, which I assume will not run on a Windows 7 64-bit machine, and Oblivion GOTY edition.  Oddly enough the Oblivion GOTY will cost me more than the Skyrim GOTY edition but I have been told that Oblivion is far better than Skyrim in terms of storyline, which I thought was amazing in Skyrim.

Do you think it is worth it at this stage to invest in Oblivion in 2014 or should I move onto another suggested title?

I haven't ever dedicated the time that these games deserve, however, I have read consistently that Morrowind offers the best story. There are also many mods that bring the game up to date visually. Also, it runs fine on my Windows 8.1 64 bit system. With that said, with respect to Oblivion, I did play it a fair bit back on the Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it then. Not sure how that holds up to today's standards. I suggest that you wait for one of those sales (should actually have some decent sales on black Friday this month) and pick up both, as I'm sure you'd be able to get each with all of their expansions for under $10 on a sale.

I agree with whats said above

Its hard to get used to things they did in older games after playing the new ones usually irritating thing they corrected and made great in the new games but becomes apprent in the old ones

Like morrowind for example swinging sword at a guy and getting beat down with fists because you cant hit him

I used to play GS here with friends of mine. I am sure this game is better than the ones you mentioned.

They still play on there.

Note: The game I mentioned is available on PC though.

I mentioned it because those games you talked about that are role playing games...  same to the one I mentioned.

Personally, the story for Oblivion is weak and the game play quite tedious. Skyrim does it much better and you'll spend much of the game comparing it to the better successor.

Morrowind (Especially with the Bloodmoon expansion pack) however is a very good game, let down a lot by advancements in modern operating systems. It takes a bit of work to get it right at say 1080p but can be well worth it. If you've never played it before though, you might find it a bit lost on you since playing the sequels but the storyline / atmosphere is very imersive.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for reading this post and throwing down some opinions.

I was suggested to get Fall Out 3 by a friend on my PS3, which I did and was one of my all time favorite games to date.

How much of a factor did the combat system in Skyrim play in your enjoyment of the game? Because if it was significant, prepare to be let-down by Morrowind and Oblivion. They had decent combat systems when they were released, but nothing near as "engaging" as Skyrim.

Have you tried modding Skyrim at all? There are some really fantastic mods available.

Oblivion and Morrowind had some modding capabilities, but not to the same level as Skyrim. I challenge very much the idea that you can mod Oblivion and Morrowind up to today's game standards (gameplay and graphics wise). Realize, many of the mods for these games really haven't been touched or updated for years now and are considered "done" as the mod developers all moved onto Skyrim.

They are both great games if you are looking for rich deep storyline. Morrowind is especially challenging as you actually have to read and pay attention to get anywhere in it unless you resort to a walkthrough.

The main Oblivion story line isn't that great, but it is rich with side stories that really carry the game. Also the DLC for Oblivion was good.

It likely will not install on Windows 8.1 if it's the GOTY edition (the one with Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine) due to SecuRom Protection. In Windows 8 that wasn't a problem, but somewhere down the road compatibility broke and now it no longer works. That's my own personal experience with it. Microsoft lists the game as not compatible as well, sadly.

Morrowind is the only tolerable Elder Scrolls game IMO, if only because the world is very strange so there's some novelty factor walking around and discovering those weird environments and creatures. Oblivion is just randomly generated generic medieval fantasy landscape with the same 3 voice actors doing all the boring uninspired dialogue for all the unbelievably ugly and badly animated NPCs. Skyrim is only marginally better but if you happen to like Skyrim (for some reason I cannot fathom) then perhaps Oblivion might still be a game for you (shudder).

Or you could play some actually good RPG like The Witcher or Dragon Age. Inquisition looks pretty good from current reviews.

If you played through Skyrim and want something to play, Oblivion is a good, game, my laptop is not very powerful, so i started playing Oblivion again a couple weeks ago and it is as good as i remember, there is things I miss from Skyrim, but things I enjoy about Oblivion.

Oblivion main story line isnt that great, and I pulled out of the main story line pretty quickly because there is so much else to do, I will get back to it, but i want to get through he thieves guild and Dark brotherhood first.

Oblivion is a great game in my opinion.  Would like to buy it again to play around, I've still got all my saves for the PS3 version.

I agree with whats said above

Its hard to get used to things they did in older games after playing the new ones usually irritating thing they corrected and made great in the new games but becomes apprent in the old ones

Morrowind is as old (at minimum) as the original Team Fortress - which itself is as old as the original Half-Life - which can run on tablets and phones (as Android proves every day).

Morrowind's combat system is rock/paper/scissors - which goes all the way back to the origins of tribal combat itself (as far as merely humans go - it exists in non-human battles as well - observe battles between "tribes" or colonies of insects).  In short, the Morrowind metric is OLDER than man.

An even more obvious example of *wheel reinvention* is Plarium, Inc - other than a few outliers,  the vast majority of THEIR titles use a similar combat metric to Morrowind - and they are quite capable of running on darn near everything. (If you have Internet access at ALL, Plarium games are darn-near unavoidable, and it's getting even harder to duck, as long-time iOS-exclusive Total Domination: Reborn is coming - and possibly as soon as Christmas - to Android.  The browser-based versions of their games are playable on Android - or iOS - today.

It's not just what you have (as a developer) - in fact, it is becoming more and more obvious that what drives game popularity - regardless of platform - is what you do with it.

I thought the stories in Oblivion and Skyrim were both totally "meh". I enjoyed the music and just wandering about in Oblivion much more than Skyrim.

I liked everything in Morrowind, especially the music, but couldn't get over the combat system.  I have armor all around, a sword, a shield; the opponent, only in cloth, has no weapon and shield was able to kick my ass.

Obilivion is old game, and after playing Skyrim, I don't think you gonna enjoy it at the same level, but if after havy modding you might like it.

For me Morrowind is one of the best games I have played. So many good memories. I don't know how well it still plays, but with the huge selections of mods it should be no problem.

Oblivion was a let down for me. Morrowind set the standard and Oblivion just didn't feel as fun. The world wasn't very diverse, it was stripped down and the leveling system just didn't work well. This can of course be improved by the huge selection of mods as well.

Skyrim was a huge hit for me. Suddenly they did everything right once again. Exploring was fun, the game had much personality and yeah, Skyrim is a jewel! :)

Go for Morrowind. The world is incredible. There's a lot more mystery and diversity to Morrowind's world.

Look at the selection of mods available and the depth of what can be done.

I contributed to of UOP, and did several other mods, so, the difference between the two is not that big. It was a bit more messy back then, that's for sure.

Are you saying that with a lot of mods, I won't notice much of a difference between Marrowind or Oblivion vs Skyrim?

With Morrowind, yes, since the game is terribly dated. With Oblivion you won't have many issues. Couldn't say which mods to use though, it has been a long time since I've bothered with TES. If I remember right, FCOM, TIE, Qarl's, the UOP mods...
