Got a "Encrypting File System" Dialog upon restart

Recommended Posts

I am not encrypting anything and neither do I want to.

And it is asking me if I want to back up my encryption key??

What did it encrypt for ###### sake? Second time by the way.

EDIT: cypher /u /n revealed nothing

I would recommend backing up the encryption key.  Did you enable Bitlocker or install any new software or make any other changes that may enable EFS?  If this is for a mobile device like a surface or other tablet then Windows 8+ automatically encrypts the file system.

If nothing on your part started this something else malicious might be trying to encrypt your files and will probably ask you for payment to decrypt the files.  If this is a case you will already have the key and will need to do a fresh install and deep cleansing of your data.

cipher /u /n gave back nothing, anything else I should run?

EDIT: I installed some updates and VS 2013 Community recently.

What OS are you running, did you just install it recently?

Yes if running windows that supports efs, it would ask you to backup your encryption key.

Can you post a screen shot of what your seeing.
