thermal paste - good deal?

Recommended Posts

why don't you save the shipping cost & go to local market yourself and buy one ? & I don't think Arctic Silver is better than any generic thermal paste.

I used generic one & got 10 degrees difference in comparison with None.

Would the Arctic Silver be significantly betther than a generic thermal paste? Is that considered a good deal?

$5.5 + $6 shipping + tax = $13 CAD

If you are talking about the stuff that comes with the CPU  for the provided heatsink - then yeah it might make a difference of 5 degrees.

If you are talking about the stuff that comes with a Corsair H watercooled setup - then no, because they use Shin Etsu paste last time I checked.

Please keep in mind, unless you are OC-ing like crazy, then paste doesnt matter - millions of PC(s) run all the time for years using the crap the OEM uses.

Thermal paste is the best example of nerds over-contemplating insignificant crap that nobody else cares about and in the end makes little to no difference.

The worst case of this is when people get in tech forums and say things like "oh man, why did you use that Dow Corning Diamond ? it sucks, AS5 pwns it !"

Those people need to be punched, then publicly ridiculed.

Interesting -- I did not know thermal paste has a shelf life.

There probably isn't a huge difference between silver loaded and regular. I'd go silver; that's what Intel use on their stock components.

Either way, what's most important is that you clean off any existing paste well (using isopropyl alcohol and Kimwipes), and apply new paste properly. Note silver paste will short any circuitry it comes in contact with; only a tiny amount is needed (about the size of a pea).

Finally, I'd rather drive a car to a local store than pay $6 for shipping!
