Should I buy Windows 8.1 now? Or delay my purchase for Windows 10?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm looking at putting a new i7 4790k desktop together and as I was adding stuff to the cart I paused after I added Windows 8.1 OEM.

I have seen some reports that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 8 users, but I have also seen reports that say it will not.

Seeing as Windows 10 is coming next year, should I hold off on waiting to upgrade?

I have a GTX 970 right now which supports DirectX 12 which I believe will require Windows 10.

Could I get away with using the Windows 10 technical preview in the interim while waiting to see how pricing will be handled for Windows 10?

Thanks for your advice, as always :)

Nim

I would advise against using the TP as a daily driver. It's still highly unstable, and you don't know when things will break.

Yeh I would just go with the tech preview if you just purchased hardware just make sure you backup your data via a external drive or OneDrive. If you haven't bought the hardware yet the new desktop form factors look pretty cool with the projectors from Dell &  HP and I'm sure other manufactures will be releasing similar ones.

My VM runs ok but the Q6600 desktop that I have with it (testing system only)  is very unstable and I have a lot of display driver wonkies (8800GT 1GB) Also has trouble with an Edimax N150 USB adapter.

Do not use Windows 10 as your main machine, if you can wait till General Availability on devices.

I use the TP on my laptop which I also develop with.  Worst mistake ever.  Not because the OS sucks, but because the bugs, glitches and unfinished portions make for frustration, especially with WiFi (and yes I have the latest drivers).

One day I may get motivated enough to remove it and put 8.1 on it.

Stick with Win 8.1

Who knows how the hardware and driver compatibility will be with the windows kernel version going from 6.3 / 6.4 to 10

I would go with 8.1 for now as WIN10 could be delayed as long as the 3rd quarter of 2015.

Get your machine up and running grab the tech preview and run it in a VM.

Even if 10 is not a free upgrade you may get a good price on it for running the TP.

I know they gave us a good price on win7 for those of us running it as testers.

I think 10 is better than 8.1. The 10TP is pretty stable and should suffice for temporary use. The 10 RTM is ecpected early 2015. But you can probably not upgrade from the TP to the RTM.

no it's not. the CP is expected in January/February and the RP several months after that. RTM probably wont be till after August

as for the OP. I'd say watch prices for awhile and if you see a good one for 8 then go for it. things aren't likely to change too much price wise this time since it's being offered as a free upgrade for 8 owners

No need to argue about RTM dates. Nobody really knows the date. But in view of the relative success of 8.1 I would expect it sooner rather than later.

not arguing, just correcting as to not confuse the OP :)
