simonlang
You say that as if nationalism is a bad thing. it is with most nations. could be perfectly seen in the dark days of wwII. however, american exceptionalism is not a bad thing at all. There's certainly a dark side to American nationalism as well. But there's nothing wrong with loving your country in itself, especially if you try to improve it. redfish
You're talking patriotism, not nationalism. And nationalism just means a belief in certain fundamental principles like the right of self-determination. Its pretty democratic and nothing scary; in fact, the principles of nationalism are embraced in the UN charter. What Nazis took up in WWII was what could more properly be called ultra-nationalism, it entailed a belief that nations were in a kind of survival of the fittest and Germany had a right to build an empire for itself and secure 'living space'. All sorts of ideas that go against the principles of nationalism. DConnell 1 Share

All sorts of ideas that go against the principles of nationalism. i think what nazis took up before and during wwII with all the crucial things they have done, the term ultra-nationalism is too weak to describe. ultranationalism might be what italians alleanza nazionale has in their program. totalitarism is more what is perfect to describe nazis and their ideology.
