Cracked my Nexus 5 screen, repair options?

Recommended Posts

I have a bad flu and drove 50km to run an errand today, the driving went well but something had to go wrong. Indeed I forgot that I had my Nexus 5 on my lap and when I got out of the car it dropped 3ft onto the asphalt. The screen now looks like a fractal of cracks and I feel like a complete idiot.

Goddamnit.

Anyway, now to fix this. I basically have two options. I can either

1) Order a replacement screen from ebay at 75$ US + shipping to Montreal, Canada + conversion to $CAD = ~115$ and attempt the repair myself

2) Go to a phone repair store like this one and pay 150$ + tax = 172,50$ to get it done in an hour with a six month warranty.

Given my current low level of energy I'm tempted to just go with option 2 especially given that assembly seems finicky and I fear making it worse than it is. But, I'd lose about 60$. Advice? Opinions?

where did you purchase the nexus 5? if it is from google play store and within a year of purchase google will do one screen replacement for free http://www.techtimes.com/articles/14844/20140904/google-will-replace-your-broken-nexus-5-for-free-heres-the-criteria.htm

EDIT nvm just saw the whole canada part

I would honestly go with option 2, you get a warranty out of it. Im pretty damn good at repairing hardware and have done many phone screens previously, but they are a pain in the butt and your time might be more valuable than paying someone else to do it.

Do it yourself, it's quite easy to fix phones I do them all the time (mostly iphones) but samsungs are easy as, new HTC are a nightmare and I have opened my N5 without much effort. This site will help you out

What I did. Cracked my Galaxy Nexus and bought a new screen/digitizer. Bought the digitizer to as it was one piece and didnt want to mess around with pulling the screen off and re-glueing it. Paid more but was worth it. Took less than 15 min to replace.

I agree with both you guys. Both N4 and N5s are pretty easy to take apart. I recently replaced the screen/digitizer of a N4 and it took about 20 mins.

Google can get in trouble for not providing warranty service.
