How to pronounce "Israel"?

Recommended Posts

Having listened to too many carols recently, I'm puzzled about the correct pronunciation of "Israel"

British people usually call it is-ray-ell, but some Americans seem to prefer is-rye-ell

Does anyone have any insight into this?  How do the people who live in that country pronounce its name?

Actually, from memory, a lot of americans I've spoken to also pronounce it is-ray-ell, Joan Rivers (R.I.P.) Did so many times on various shows,

I'm going to go with that pronunciation....

Why don't we ask people who live there how they pronounce it? I'd say they would know  :laugh:

Anyways... I always thought it was Is-re (long e)-ale at lease that's how everyone around me always said it, but on tv they always call it Is-ry-al

I would normally agree, but that wouldn't work with Switzerland. :laugh:

Let's not go with American pronunciations... The times I have heard "Eye-rack" and " Ay-rab" have made my flesh crawl.

It's "iz-rail"

That's the Russian pronunciation. The s doesn't sound like z in Israel.

It's Ees-ra-el. Is-rael.

no it is not.   russian is:  iz-ra'-eel

what Nik L posted is is the official English pronunciation as per world English.

iz'-rail   as pointed out before me. cannot go more correct than that.

"that place over there"

Texas

I don't know, aren't there a lot of ultra-religious Christians in Texas? Israel is probably one of the only other countries on the planet they care about enough to know what and where it is.

I've always pronounced it Is-rail. Is-reel doesn't sound right somehow.

German words get the worst treatment, I think.

Porsche, Braun, Neanderthal, Deutsche, & Adidas are the ones that cop it the worst.

Porsche -> porsch

Braun -> brawn

Neanderthal ->neanderthall

Deutsche -> doytsch

Adidas -> adeedus

It should be:

Porsche -> Por-scha

Braun -> brown

Neanderthal -> nay-ander-tall

Deutsche -> doytsch-a

Adidas -> adi-das
