Mindovermaster Moderator Posted December 26, 2014 Moderator Share Posted December 26, 2014 I've fiddled around with Arch a little, and I think I understand the install now. And pacman and yaourt. Question I have for you Arch-itects, is what do you load after install? A network manager? Some DE as XFCE or OpenBox? VLC? Tell me, what you do with it first hand? Tell me, what you do with it first hand?First thing I do with any new install, regardless of the OS -- image the sucker so I don't have to do it again, and again post tweakery. But after that, I'm personally not much help as 99% of the time my Arch systems are headless servers, so it's pretty much just OpenSSH and then whatever stack(s) I'm working with and call it a day. But, here's a good list to give you some ideas. Covers the stuff most desktops would probably use, and sometimes points out things you may have overlooked. Getting the core installed and working is only half the battle.. now you need to make something with it.https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/General_recommendations
xxxxxx.xxxxxx
Firstly, be very careful when using Yaourt. Its not as great as some people make out, occasionally you can run into dependency issues which Yaourt doesn't always play well with. I just install AUR packages manually following the instructions. Secondly, when running a system upgrade (pacman -Syu) always check the Arch site first for any new news regarding any manual changes being required before an upgrade. Personally after completing the installation i installed xorg, slim, openbox, pypanel and urxvt. Then played around with configurations for some time, ensuring that i have dual head setup correctly, sound the way i want it and then it was pretty much like any other system. Just looking around on the Arch wiki for applications that i may find useful and installing them
