various streaming player manufacturers options for spec. characters, upper case_for router key

Recommended Posts

Just found (apparently) that a Sony BPD-S790 bluray/DVD player w/ Netflix, only has 4 special characters & no upper case letters to select from its on-screen keypad, to enter the network wireless router's WPA2 key.  I use a long, random, alpha-numeric & spec. chars router key.

No upper case letters - really?

Are most other mfg's of streaming players that connect wirelessly to your router also this limited in the available characters & only offer lower case letters, or is it just Sony?

Or do some brands of players offer more or less a full keyboard, plus upper case letters?

I wonder how to find out different brands capabilities on this, w/o hooking them up?

Aside from drastic reduction in bit strength (by tailoring my router key to suit what a Sony player allows), I'd have to change the key in all other devices connected to the router.

Suggestions / comments?

Edit:  You CAN get most / all special characters, upper case letters on the Sony on-screen keypad, but you have to know the secret.

Sony's support site (& chat) is useless to get details on many remotes (mine - RMT-B122A).

Finally, after pushing every button, I found:

The remote buttons labeled only "yellow, blue, red, green," have hidden functions.  No documentation explains them & support wasn't aware of what they did.  Said "no detailed remote manual is available."

Anyway, when entering the wireless router PW in Sony on-screen setup, the named COLORS buttons on Sony remote are important.

On this remote, the button named Blue, cycles the on-screen keypad, to display different sets of special characters, upper or lower case letters, etc.  (I think it's the Blue)

You have to cycle thru each of those "keypad" screens, using Blue button, to find the right characters for entering PW.

There was not an obvious "delete" or "back space" key, to remove just ONE incorrect character of the entered PW (it would clear ALL of them).

Again, Sony support was clueless.  Found that the Green key functions as the backspace / delete key, when in the Sony screen to enter a router PW

Seems the "cursor" needs to be active on the line where the already selected characters are displayed.

If the cursor is in front of a character on the "entry line," then hitting "Green" button back spaces & deletes it.  I guess you could keep hitting Green key & delete multiple characters.

I'd still like to know if other mfgs have better remotes (& better remote documentation), easier on-screen keypad UIs - for entering PWs, than Sony?

Also, if other mfgs of devices that stream, say, Netflix, make you create an acct on their site, before you can access an existing Netflix acct - the way Sony does?

Roku TV does not have silly limits like that.

No char limit and it has special chars.

No RADIUS support tho (user/pass)
