$170.. ow??  Show it for $130 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Motorola-SurfBoard-SB6183-DOCSIS/dp/B00MA5U1FW

So your tvs all wired or wireless?  Can you draw up how stuff is connected..  You do understand your never going to see 300 mbps wireless with what you have..  Not even /2 of that, #2 only has 10/100 interface so best you could see is 90ish mbps, and your repeating wireless?  Yeah /2 again.

Sorry but all of that wireless stuff is OLD and crappy..  the 4500 do have gig interfaces but..  They are not even dual band, you have to pick 2.4 or 5..  If your going to have a lot of wifi on at the same time and want to maximize your bandwidth your going to need better wireless for 1, and 2nd do you have anything that can even route 300mbps which devices are you using for your router.. Can you even get 300mbps with a wired gig machine?

I would suggest that the pc all wired, the xbox and ps3 wired as well.  Those devices are not really mobile devices like tablets/laptops and phones..  They should be on a wire!

Do you have any clients that are AC?  To see 300mbps real world over wireless your really going to have to be AC.  But AC wave 2 is coming out so really wouldn't suggest buying any AC routers/AP at the moment to be honest.

@Budman:Yeah i got it for $130 plus $30 for 2 year extensive warranty if i drop it or water damage it is covered plus tax so $170 out the door.

The Asus RTN12D1 I just got because I had the first asus RTN12A1 with 3 year warrant from frys electronics since it was almost up on March 24, 2015 I went to frys electronics and they gave me the newest revision of that router.

Apart from that I havent invested in any new equipment, this has been equipment that my friends and  relatives no longer needed and gave to me.

I have no problem running cat6 cable thru my home. what router do you suggest with ac capabilities or should i wait till the ac2 routers hit the market?

Being that I have two 4500 what if i set one to broadcast only in 5ghz and the other in 2.4ghz

@RedReddington:I called twc after reviewing my monthly bill and realizing that i had been paying for the ultimate 300 package and my computer was only doing 100mbs when i tested it on speedtest.net.While on the phone with technical support he said they provide 300mbs service but you have to buy your own equipment currently they only have modems that support 100mbs. The only two choices I was given was the Motorola Surfboard SB6183 or Netgear C6300.

This is my current set up.

So what router do you have now that can give you 300mbps even with a wire?  I doubt the 4500 can do 300mbps nat..  Smallnet has it doing 242 wan to lan.  Which is more than I thought..  Do you get that now?  I would do a test with just your modem, and then behind a router, with a wire..  Do you see your isp 300?

The one in 2.4 and other in 5 is a decent idea..  But they still really suck from a performance standpoint..  What are your clients? Do you have 5 clients? But that would be what I would do working with that hardware.

Your really going to need something that can give you 300mbps want to lan.. You have any old pcs laying around with all that other hardware - pfsense do it no problem..  You could go with something like the unifi edge lite <100$ https://www.ubnt.com/edgemax/edgerouter-lite/ that will for sure do it without any issue.  Then you can use what you have until wave 2 is out..

But again wave 2 is pointless unless you have AC clients?  Do you have any AC clients?  If not get some unifi pro AP and place them to best cover your house.  Maybe 1 can cover you, then go with the pro..  Or get a few of them, or get a pro and a couple of $70 2.4 N only models.

Wire them up to best cover your house.. Then you be rocking that 300 mbps.. Again doesn't matter what you buy unless you have AC clients if you expect to see 300mbps over wifi.

edit: Got some dimensions for the outside?

How big is the house..  But yeah that is typical problem.. Your ###### wifi router is in the corner of the house where cable comes in, and everything is wifi ;)  Wire that puppy up with some good AP.. Run a wire to the garage and use that for your PCs, get a decent switch, etc.

The only time i see 300mbps is when i connect the desktop computer in the living room directly to the motorola surfboard. After like you say I get about 90 mbs to 150mbs using one of the ethernet ports on the RTN12.

I can wait till the ac2 routers come out because I currently have nothing using an ac wireless adapter.

The newest type I have are 802.11n and that is only on my computer located in the garage.

Other than that everything runs on G with the exception of my mothers old laptop using b but I have an extra usb g adapter.

I am going to go ahead and purchase the router you suggested for now till the ac2 comes out then i will buy new ac usb adapters for all my computers,as well as the ap pro. If i need more juice ill buy a couple of $70 ap to run on n only.

"You have any old pcs laying around with all that other hardware - pfsense do it no problem..??"

What are you referring to? yes i have several old computers laying around for example i have two old sony vaios pcv-rz22g,a couple of hp and dells.

Given with what i have now what set up do you suggest to set up while I start to purchase the new equipment. Honestly its going to take me about a month to buy everything you recommended so Id like to get the best that I can with what I have for now.

What do you think about the following example?

BTW according to the asus website my router is supposed to handle speeds up to 300mbs.

http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN12_D1/

it's a 300Mbps theoretical max. Things like range, interference (and used to be encryption not sure if that's still vaild) mean that you won't get 300Mbps unless you're really close.

@SharpGreen Thanks.

After re-reading everything I think what Budman was trying to tell me is that thru the ethernet ports on the RTN12D1 a max of 100mbs is allowed.I think only thru wifi can I get higher speeds than 100mbs on that particular router.

300mbps is RAW TOTAL Bandwidth of the protocol -- its marketing hype that they use those numbers.  Just like your G.. Do you see 54mbps?  No you see about 18-21, maybe 23 if the stars are all aligned.  Rough thing to do is /2 whatever number they give you.  And keep in mind they combine the 2.4 and 5 on a dual band when they give you numbers like 1750..  That is 1300 on the 5ghz side and 450 on the 2.4 side - but no client can use both at the same time, etc..

What I love is they sell it as a 300, so you could maybe see 150, but then they put a 100mbps nic on it.. WTF??  Wireless is half duplex so if your wireless to wireless you have to do another /2.  So if its rated at 300 and your wireless to wireless about the best you could expect would be 75.

Dude you have B and G devices?  And no router that can even route at 300, why did you upgrade to 300??  First thing I would do is get a wire run to your area so you can wire all your stuff.  If you have some older PCs around - make sure they have 2 gig nics, you can pick up another gig nic for pennies.  Then put pfsense on it https://www.pfsense.org/%C2"'> It can easy route 300mbps unless its really old hardware, or vm.. I can only get about 500mbps on mine but its a vm on older hp n40l.

If all you have is B and G stuff your old wifi stuff is fine.

  • 1 year later...

I have also just recently upgraded to the 300 meg download and I was given the heiress Touchstone TG 2472 modem and even on my new iPhone I'm getting 197 to 200 meg download with the 5 GHz Wi-Fi that's the only way you'll get the full speed I also receive about 282 300 megs on my Xbox one wired you have to have them within 20 or 30 feet or you won't get those beats unfortunately and if you have a lot of metal or a lot of wood in the house that also affects it
