HELP! Internal D drive wiped after upgrading to Win 10!

Recommended Posts

HELP, I upgraded to Win 10, and I have a C drive and an internal 2TB D drive. When I upgraded it cannot read my D drive and says it's EMPTY!!!!!!!!!!!! I had so many files and didn't think to back it up because I didn't think it would mess with my D drive.

Please Please Please Help. Any ideas? Any Fixes? Can I get my D drive back to what it was pre-win 10???

A LOT of important things were on the D drive. I am hoping to hell I can restore it somehow.

Where did you install the OS?  Can you put the drive in another computer (maybe a hard drive enclosure and plug it into another computer via USB)?

Worst comes to worst there are data recovery services you can use to retrieve it, just don't mess with it and try to write anything to it.

Windows 10 is still in its testing phase. Anything can go wrong.

The best thing to do is download a linux distro like ubuntu etc... copy it onto a usb drive. Boot it up in preview mode and see if your files are still on your 2TB drive.

If its still there than just reinstall windows 8.1.

And get back with your report.

At best it just got formatted or something. As long as you don't write to the drive you should be able to run an application on a different computer to un-erase  the files.

As others have suggested boot a linux distro and take a peak at the drive. Is it just an empty partition? Or does it act as even the partition has been nuked?

What i've done in the past, even on my main workstation when I've installed the final retail version of Windows 8 is unplug the other drives (all 4 of them) in my system except the one I want to install windows one. A little tid bit for the future.

... oh god....just wait for Budman.

I'll just channel Budman and say what he will say only kinder.

In the future You should probably do a routine backup on those important files. Install a second 2TB drive or a 2TB external drive and setup a nightly backup. / end of Budman channeling.

I tried to restore the device, When I click that it says "Restoring 10GB" Then stops and said "OneTouch 4 E drive or something, is disconnected."

The stupid thing is the OneTouch is an external drive. So, idk why it's asking me to connect it, I went ahead and plugged in the oneTouch and still said the same error. It seems the items are still there, but We can't restore it. And as far as the above suggestions, I have no effing idea how to do that stuff. xD I am so scared I am going to make it worse. It's my mothers computer, and she had all the pictures of my son and I since he was born (he's 10 months old now) So that's why were trying. I have a computer knowledgeable friend coming over tomorrow, I will show him your suggestions. The most we've done thus far is trying to restore the drive itself, which showed 10gb of items to restore, and we opened disk manager and properties window, other than that. Nothing. We can't even use the D drive. It's shown as a Dynamic drive instead of basic? idk if that matter.

Leave it alone for now don't do anything that will mess up the 2tb drive. And wait for your tech savy buddy.

I've been itching to know why you want to upgrade to Windows 10 TP? And doing so using your mothers computer?....  :o

My mother despises windows 8.1 and wanted it gone, So she wanted to try out Windows 10 after my friend saying he had it on his computer. For him thus far it's worked just fine. Though he didn't have the additional drive like she does. I wish I weren't so ###### with computers lol. I am just really really hoping I can get back the pictures, I could careless if everything else on the computer was messed up. I just want those pictures. I will wait until he gets here, but if anyone else has any ideas, please let me know. I am going to show him the replies from my post and see what he thinks is best to do.

Don't worry, we've all been there. When I was a young teen (1994) I installed a Mem Turbo app on our family Gateway p5 60 computer and caused it to blue screen and windows 95 would no longer boot. My parents had to call and pay the local computer guy to fix it :( ..

Hopefully your tech friend can work his magic!

One thing I would recommend if it's really important data. Is to do a sector by sector clone of the drive (and man will that take a while). That will require another big drive. But that way you could work on that one without worrying about mucking up original one even more.

When I open file explorer and click on my computer, it shows the C and D drive. The D drive somehow got turned into a Dynamic drive instead of basic. And it shows 1.8tb of 1.8tb free for use. I think it may have to do with my mom having windows 8 installed on both drives. But, I have no stinkin clue. I still have yet to see my friend who knows a bit about computers. I am guessing if he converts it to a basic drive all photos and stuff will be lost? So I am going to try recovery tools that have been listed here.

EaseUS was able to recover the stuff, but every photo and file is corrupted. I don't know if it's because of the fact that the Drive is still dynamic or what, but I am so ###### that all my photos of my son from his birth are gone.. .They're there. But, all corrupted.

Why, oh why, if you're not tech savvy, would you download a preview operating system?

When you go to download the preview, one of the first things it shows you:

A preview for PC experts

And on the list of things to determine if it's "right for you":

Really know your way around a PC and feel comfortable troubleshooting problems, backing up data, formatting a hard drive, installing an operating system from scratch, or restoring your old one if necessary.

I'm really really low on sympathy here.

Take your hard drive to a 3rd party data recovery service, stop trying to do it yourself it sounds like you're just screwing it up more.  Or have your friend do it. But don't touch the thing anymore.

It was recommended by a good friend. Thus why I installed it. I would have figured my mom would have backed up her ###### first. But, no. I am just trying to fix the mess.

Download Xubuntu or another distro, put it on a usb stick (dd, unetbootin, etc), then try and mount the drive in question. If it fails to mount, the partition table has probably been wiped. In that situation, the filesystem and all its data is still there, you just need to recreate the layout in fdisk, gparted, etc. Unless of course you somehow did a full wipe, in which case, there's no hope.

If I was you I will not mess around and just find someone that knows well about computers or pay for recovery services. Do not try yourself to do it because it is clear that you will mess up the thing even more.

In the same vein as this post, is it really critical that you get your files back, or would it just stink to lose them, but you'd get over it eventually?

If it's really critical, then generate an image of the drive, then unplug that disk, and do all further recovery operations on the image file so that there is no risk of damaging the original copy of the data. If you don't know how to make the image, then consider a data recovery service.

This. I would make an image of the drive and hand it over to that friend. After the image, take the physical disk out of that computer and in the case your friend is not able to recover all you want, I would pay for professional recovery services. That's why it's important to avoid using the disk or keep messing with it.

As someone said earlier in this thread, my sympathy is low but I do feel for you because it's a hell to loose important things like family photos, professional documents, etc. That's why having backups is important. You now have learned that the hard way but I'm sure this won't happen to you again.

Besides, you shouldn't be playing with a Preview version of any OS if you don't know your way around computers. I hope you can get as much data back as possible. Good luck.

Routine back up? I disconnect all non-essential drives when I upgrade an OS. Nothing can go wrong, unless its a RAID, thats the only time I wouldn't. Yes, yes! Wait for ze Master!

Windows 10 TP has a massive amount of problems on it. On my brothers PC, I installed it, and it crashed his PC. Everything on the drive is gone but Windows 10.

My mother despises windows 8.1 and wanted it gone, So she wanted to try out Windows 10 after my friend saying he had it on his computer. For him thus far it's worked just fine. Well, first off, shame on you. Never upgrade something without doing a massive amount of research. One of the Network guys upgraded firmware on the router, managed to delete all of our information regarding connections, passwords, etc. They managed to take down the entire Data Center for 12 hours. But that's irrelevant. Point is, if you're aren't knowledgable about something, ask! BudMan is being bombarded with my questions. :)

Secondly, I would've bought Windows 7, instead of upgrading. I own multiple Serial Keys for each OS, I love being a student with access to MSDNAA! Makes my life so easy!

Last but not least... Guys are we sure that the tables weren't just deleted? I know I've had that issue before, when the tables were deleted, and it looked like my drive was formatted.

I was able to recover data from it using EaseUS Recovery Wizard. But, to no avil, the images and all files are corrupted. I've just given up. Thanks for suggestions...

EaseUS Data Recovery Pro has saved my butt many times - absolutely love that software.

recuva ?

If it wrote over those sectors - even the NSA couldnt get that data back....well unless they figured out how to engineer time travel -

1. Your data is gone.

2. You shouldn't have installed a pre-release OS.

3. Don't follow what your friends do with their computers.

And that pretty much sums up what I was thinking when I read the 1st couple of sentences.

I imagined how it all played out:

Person wants mom to think he's a hacker

Person says he can install a top secret OS that Microsoft hasnt released yet

Mom tells her friends that her son is some kind of genius

Person realizes he didnt understep the 1st step of installing an OS

Person never stopped to think that mom doesnt care if she has Windows 10

Person never considered that a pre-release OS wasnt very wise choice to install on mom's PC who barely knows difference between Word and Windows

At least, thats how I imagined it

Hacking is like Fight Club. You don't talk about it. Crap, I just broke the rule. :shiftyninja:

Also, thanks for the EaseUS. :)
