Microsoft recently updated its HoloLens site with a new question-and-answer section comprised of the most popular questions its received, including what kind of apps will work with the augmented reality platform.
The updated website was announced in an email sent to Windows Insiders by Gabe Aul, head of the public testing program, and it now addresses 10 popular questions, though there's no option to submit a question. Among those questions is "What does it mean to have holograms on Windows 10?," followed by the following answer:
Windows 10 is the first platform to support holographic computing with APIs that enable gaze, gesture, voice, and environmental understanding on an untethered device. With Windows 10, holograms are Windows universal apps, and all Windows universal apps work as holograms. Holograms in Windows 10 will lead to entirely new ways for us to communicate, create, and explore.
That answer reiterates what Microsoft said shortly after HoloLens was announced with Windows Holographic, though the company hasn't said exactly how the universal apps will function, such as whether they'll appear as their desktop or smartphone versions or if a specialized interface will be used.
For those interested in developing apps for the platform, the Q&A states that attendees of its upcoming Build conference will receive the first details on the HoloLens and Windows Holographic SDK. A timeframe for the SDK's release has yet to be announced.
