PCI-E extension/riser cable

Recommended Posts

I'm currently in the process of building a new dual opteron workstation, and given the layout of the motherboard, I'm gonna need a PCI-Express x16 to x16 riser cable in order to mount the GPU. The only issue is, I can't seem to find a x16 to x16 cable that is long enough. I've found no end of longer x16 to x1 cables, although as far as I know, these are gonna be pretty much useless for what I'm trying to do (correct me if I'm wrong here, but I'm assuming that they're useless in this case.)

The motherboard is L shaped, so the GPU would sit roughly in the middle of the chassis, with nothing to mount it on. And if I'm honest, I'm not keen on having it just sitting freestanding in the slot, without any other kind of support. There is also an issue with all the slots being placed in a line, rather than next to one another, which makes it impossible to mount the cards anyway, as the other slots stop the card from sitting correctly. I'd also rather not have the back of the card resting against the conductive metal of the CPU cooler.

Does anyone have any suggestions/places to buy them from? I've scoured the internet, but as of yet I've had no success.

What kind of case and motherboard are you using? This sounds interesting.

There was a project on overclockers where a guy built a PC on a wall with x16 ribbon cables that he had to wrap with emi shielding so they would work. Just found the cable he was using.

Cable I used for my steambox: http://www.amazon.com/PCI-E-Express-Extender-Flexible-Extension/dp/B008BZBFTG

Cable the guy used on his build: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/3M/8KC3-0726-0250/?qs=sA3qAAQcQeGUg2lxOdGD%252bA%3D%3D&kpid=940325120&gclid=CjwKEAjw96aqBRDNhM6MtJfE-wYSJADiMfggD7Qe6RUCZrsA5lIi7DOd5i9b36UGOEzg3VulvMsfIxoCa0nw_wcB

This is what your looking for correct?

Sure, I'm using a Supermicro H8DGU-F

with an OCUK Professional 4U rackmount case (pretty sure that this is just a generic unbranded product that they resell)

Just gotta finish setting some stuff up, and I'll see if I can get a photo of the inside, to make what I'm actually trying to do clearer.

Yeah, that's definitely the right sort of thing. The issue is just finding one long enough.

*Bump*

Anybody have any suggestions? (seriously considering using some kind of makeshift bracket here, and zip-typing the GPU from it...)

How long does it need to be?

Off the top of my head, I'd say about... 50-60 cm. I've found a place that sells suitable 30 cm riser cables, but they're not quite long enough. This is probably a stupid question, but... Would plugging one riser cable into another be a bad idea? While, I can't see why it wouldn't work.. I'm not sure if daisy chaining cables to connect a

Anything longer then 30cm starts to compromise the signal, kinda like ethernet cables max out at roughly 100m. That expensive one is probably a really high quality cable to offset signal loss/ interference. You could try chaining powered risers together as they are so cheap its worth a shot....
