Printing issues from VMware, wtf

Recommended Posts

So I've been handed this VM machine. It's Server 2008 R2. The VM is running on a physical server that has ESXi v5.5.

I can ping the printer's IP from the VM and I was able to add a printer queue using the correct drivers from HP. But I can't even get a test page to print. It just keeps failing.

I did notice that when creating the queue it did take awhile on some steps.

Is there something special I have to do to get a printer working from a server OS running in VMware that's hosted on ESXi?

Thanks!!

Alex

No it should be like any other server, I have a print server running 2008 with 20+ printers on and they run just fine on ESXi 5.5.

I'd check the networking and see if you can get to the config via a browser.

Hmmm, interesting....

I can get to the printers config from my laptop using Firefox, but can't from the VM using IE even though the machine can ping it. Wonder what the heck could be blocking it...

Setting the firewall wide open just to test didn't have any affect. Odd.

just because an IP answers ping doesn't mean its the actual thing your trying to get too.  Did you validate the mac of the IP your pinging.. Is this ip your pinging on the same network as your vm machine?  Sure there not a firewall between you and the printer?
