AndyD
Do I have to reserve or will the upgrade still be available regardless? I have 5 pcs that this will be applicable for Also, keys? Iso? I wouldn't want to do in place upgrades of a new os

I never saw MS comment on ISO availability so show me where they did? Intersect and Nogib 2 Share
+mram Subscriber² Posted June 3, 2015 Subscriber² Share Posted June 3, 2015 Why not? I would expect the ISO to be available immediately - this isn't "beta" anymore, and it will be MASS deployed. As far as it being quick to download, well... that's another thing. Nick H. Supervisor Posted June 3, 2015 Supervisor Share Posted June 3, 2015 Just a guess, but won't it be related to your serial key? By that I mean the following: I have a serial key that allows me to install Windows 8. I have been notified that I am entitled to "reserve" a copy of Windows 10 for when it gets released. However, if I do not install and register Windows 10 within one year, I will have to pay to upgrade rather than getting it for free. That would also mean that if I wanted I could install it via an ISO file (providing it is the equivalent version to my current copy of Windows 8) rather than the update and there wouldn't be an issue. But I will still be required to activate my copy within a year. Perhaps I have misunderstood the initial question though?
AndyD
I would imagine that the key for Windows 10 will be different than my key for Windows 8. I'm just confused but it's mostly because this process is different than what it has been for the last 20 years and no one in media seems to be commenting it. I wouldn't want to do in place upgrades of a new os Well the Icon isn't just to reserve it also has tools to check the compatibility of your current drivers and software to Windows 10. So I would check each PC and see how compatible they are. goretsky 1 Share

When you do the upgrade either by the update or with the ISO you will activate a new key. Then you can any time download the ISO to do a clean install that will be activated with the same key received during the update. Yes the requirement to activate within a year is true but the update and the activation happen at the same time. I would imagine that the key for Windows 10 will be different than my key for Windows 8. I'm just confused but it's mostly because this process is different than what it has been for the last 20 years and no one in media seems to be commenting it. Yes it will be it will be issued at the update whether update is the online update or an ISO update. What if I'm not getting the icon on my PC? AI haven't heard an answer to that question yet but I'm sure it will be out their soon.

I have no idea if it's related but I also can't get the May 2015 firmware update to install on my Surface Pro 3. It says it's going to reboot and install, it reboots and doesn't do anything and the update is still sitting in Windows Updates.

Brian M. Veteran Posted June 4, 2015 Veteran Share Posted June 4, 2015 What I'm interested in is how this works for OEM copies. I have a little Windows 8 tablet which can be upgraded, but I'd never do an in-place upgrade. Hopefully I can get a key for it and then do a clean install
WAQT
I am sure that MS would have an ISO available from day 1. Perhaps something like this, from Windows 8.1: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media. What I think about what the reserve means is that you will get an email when Windows 10 launches that includes your new key. You will be able to make your own ISO without providing a key, like you did with Windows 8.1 (link above). That seems logical to me.

That way, you got key stored in PC after the upgrade. You don't need a key for upgrade... but after upgrade, no need a key for clean install because the key is stored somewhere... I think the key is linked to your Microsoft Account, I could be wrong. If you install on other device, it will ask your key to enter for installation, unless you reserve a copy on each device. It won't ask you for a key on same device if you install on that device... you are able to do the clean install anytime, no need a key for that. That's why you don't need a key if you upgrade first when RTM release then do the clean install. A new key is for reservation users for RTM or they buy a copy from the store. MikeChipshop Member Posted June 7, 2015 Member Share Posted June 7, 2015 All reserving does (i imagine) is pre-download it to your machine and notify you when it's ready. You'll still be able to just update on release day with out reserving. ^^ at least, that's what i assume. adrynalyne 1 Share
