UPS for Datacenter

Recommended Posts

Does anybody have any suggestions on companies that sell UPS?  I'd like a company that would help figure out how big of one we need.  I worked with one company at my last job that just needed a list of devices that would be on the UPS and he was able to size one for us.  I can't remember who that company was (and I don't think I'd be able to work with them anyways since they only work with this companies customers).

We don't have a very big datacenter.  3 dl380 HP servers for our VMware hosts, a few sans, an I-series, our phone system and switches.

We've installed a generator and aren't sure we need our big old UPS anymore (we've had to pre VMware so it could support all of our servers 20+ I'd say at one time.  We need to replace capacitors and that isn't cheap.  We're wondering if it's cheaper to downgrade a little bit and buy a new unit.

APC.  Their UPS's range from small desktop units to ones that support hundreds of car battery sized batteries. Talk to them or talk to your electrician (they should have the ability to help you size it).  I have 3 ups's that are about 7 foot high by 20 feet long by 3 feet thick by apc...it will run the building for about 1 day without power....how big do you want to go?  You can also talk to vendors like SHI, Insight, or CDW, they will gladly put you in touch with a rep.

What are you looking to do with it?  How much time do you want the equipment to be up for?  What kind of alerting do you want or need?  Do you want it to be standalone (like a network printer) or attached to a server to be able to give you reports?  With what you are talking about, you could get away with one or two SmartUPS 3000.  You can start with this  http://www.apc.com/tools/ups_selector/

We're just looking for 15+ minutes of battery time.  The generator will start up after we loose power within 5 minutes I think.  We run the generator biweekly to make sure everything works on it.

The 3000s will probably be the ticket.  use the ups selector.  that will give you a very good ball park, you could always go larger than what it says.

The iseries could set it off to be a symmetra LX 8kVA.  I have no clue what model iseries you have (there is more than one).

those look like generators (which he has).  the issue is to offset the time the generator takes to spin up (go to battery for 30 seconds to a few minutes).  We are a small facility with only 2 generators.
