Interference, Maybe?

Recommended Posts

I have 2 of these:

http://www.sabrent.com/category/hard-drive-enclosures/EC-7F83/

They work great, but the only issue I have, that it messes up my Mom's radio, right back to back to my room.

Both me and my Mom/Dad share the same outlet line as mine. Could it be that it's overloading the line? I never had a problem with it when I had 2 computers running here once...

I'd try a surge protector, it will protect your drives in the event of a lightning storm/power surge and should do a reasonable job of cleaning the power.

I have 3 surge protectors. That is not the problem...

what "surge" protectors? most are just power strips with a fake-ass fuse that only blows at 120% or more of normal household voltage or some crap... extremely high let thru voltage and no real protection

Best to get a line conditioner or better yet an actual APC UPS.

I have 3 (maybe one laying around somewhere) of these:

Or very similar to it...

Should I get something bigger?

I have a lot of bulging bricks, there like a safe adapter I could use? Not the old plugs...

get something better.... even APC has low end crap...

they are like Logitech..... Logitech gaming and mid range is excellent and the lower end is just... OK.

I'd get a 550VA at least UPS.

I got the backUPS 1000XS for 120 and I'm sure you can find it cheaper than when I got it. (1000VA 660W) (Please note: newer revision presented in link price may be higher)

I also got a BackUPS350G for like 36 off amazon.com recently for the PoE switches.  (350VA 225W)

Are you saying put the surge protectors into that? Because, I have a lot of power plugs...

Edit: These surge protectors lasted me for a good number of years now.

While the interference could be conducted through the electrical power cables, it is more likely the interference is radiated and this is causing issues with the radio as there is only a wall separating them. A quick check is in order. Get some aluminum foil, tear off a reasonably large sheet and place it between the device (plus the USB cable) and the wall. Does the radio work? If yes, then the issue is the noise radiated by the enclosure and not related to the electrical power supply.

I'd say it has a ######/faulty power adapter.

Get a decent multi adaptor to test it out. Something like this...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0083S19YW/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1435861413&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SY200_QL40&keywords=multi+power+adapter&dpPl=1&dpID=41s1vfDHclL&ref=plSrch

Always handy to have one of those laying around.

I tried that, but it helped like a tiny bit. I'll see if the brick is the issue...

More than likely a very poor job of shielding the components inside the power supply unit. I'm finding this to be the case quite a bit these days. Due the the voltage differences over here, they tend to emit a lot of audible EMI so it's a dead give away.

I moved my external to the other side of the room, went into my moms room and turned on her radio....

It worked fine... So I guess it's the shielding on the external case that craps. wasn't the large power header.

Should I get like multiple UPS's?

Because I have to power my 3 LCD's, my Intel NUC computer, Speakers, main computer, Cable Modem, Router, small switch, and my phone dock. Think that's it... for now...

Yeah... but you might want to get two of the XS1000 or equivalant model and that should work fine what is your budget?

I don't have a hearsay budget, but maybe under $200? Maybe intstead of the 1000, get like a 750? (between the 500 and 1000)

Something like that?

That has nothing to do with this. My wireless devices never caused an issue.

I used to say that 2 until I traced interferance on my wireless TV but as soon as I changed to 5.7 mghz the problem went away. Mabye its the same, you think its not related, but it is.

Might not be good enough for a main rig That number is Volt-Amps and not watts there's a special forumla to figure out actual watts if you google it... I think be memoreeeeeyyyyyit's around 425 watts for 700VA?

You'll wanna at least match the power supply you got's watt's :) Also if you wanna protect extra stuff like modems/routers/monitors you'll need a lil leeway. my 1000VA or 660W UPS can power PC+Modem+Router+monitor for 50 mins on 3/4ths load/ 1hr 15 on light load and 35 on full load maxed cores. I got a 620W PSU (Antec HCG-620M)

"1000 VoltAmps is roughly 650 Watts"

So yea, was close.

I should take out my Kill-a-watts and check that...

Sorry -

We just moved everything over to SUPERNAP in LV and we were shocked at the military-type facility - They have Gov't stuff as well as amazon's data so they are pretty hardcore about security... plus it looks really cool. ;)
