Macbook Pro Late 2011 - normal temps?

Recommended Posts

So I purchased this Macbook Pro 3 years ago and it is still running the same OSX Lion. My MacBook pro is heating up a lot just wanted to make sure it is normal. I've been using the laptop since about 11:45 and it is currently 2:13. Here are the stats I recieved using a program called Hardware Monitor

I'm using is Firefox. Some YouTube music videos and about 4 tabs open. Thunderbird is also running as well as Evernote and Audirvana :)

That's not normal.   I've seen temps like that, but you really should be 20 - 30F lower.  I wouldn't be surprised if the thermal paste has dried up.

Yeah I thought so as well. I'm going to head to the Apple store to see what they can do. I'm watching a video about applying thermal paste to a MB and I just don't want to go through the hassle seems like I'd have to take out everything! Thank you!

Take the back panel off and get rid of all the dust. Here the readings for my rMBP. This is pretty close to what they've always been since I brought it. When the dust builds up they get much higher.

It's currently the middle of winter and the computer's been on for about an hour.

I had the same problem with my McBook Early 2011 version. Temps would be in the high 60s or low 70s at idle. Apple didn't do anything about it even though I visited the Apple Store a few times asking the same question. They told me this was normal.

Well, the sad end to the story is that the laptop died just a week after my AppleCare expired. I suspect the high temps shortened the lifespan considerably.

Unfortunately now yours is also out of warranty so you're kind of on your own. The temps are not normal, at least not by normal computing standards. By Apple's standards, maybe that's fine or some monkey in their factory used mayonnaise as thermal paste.

Yeah I ended up taking it into the Apple store and they ran AST which didn't find anything (I knew it, I have used TechTool and Apple Diagnostics and both came up fine). So now they are running an extended CST. Out of warranty I hope they do NOT find anything but at the same time good to know before I invest more $$$ into it.

Yeah well i'm hoping it will last but i've seen the reports :( Anyways, Apple took about 2 days to run a full diagnostics. Everything was fine as predicted. SO, as a project I bought Arctic MX-4 thermal paste and re-applied new paste. We'll see how it plays out!
