Installation help

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

I'm about to install freeBSD and have a few last minute questions:

Okay, I currently run Windows XP and Red Hat 9 dual boot, where at the beginning I select which O/S I want to use. I want to overwrite RH9 with freeBSD.

SO when I start the install, it shows me the following screen:
Name   PType  Desc       Subtype  Flag
-       12    unused     0
ad0s1   7     fat        12
ad0s2   4     ext2fs     131
ad0s3   4     ext2fs     131
ad0s4   4     extended DOS, LBA  - 15
-       12    unused      0

and it gives me some options... (a) use entire disk (d) delete slice (c) create new slice.  NOw I'm assuming that ad0s3 is my RH9 partition (the size is larger than the other ext2fs), so do I first (d)elete this slice and then (c)create a new fragment in ad0s3?

The next screen is Install Boot Manager For Drive ad0
where I have 3 options:
1) Install FreBSD Boot Manager
2) Install standard MBR (no boot manager)
3) Leave MBR untouched.

Which one do I choose if I want to select the O/S at boot up?

Thanks in advance for any help, I just don't want to delete everything

I can't answer most of your questions, but I can tell you that both ad0s2 and ad0s3 are your Red Hat installation. If you don't want Red Hat any more, you should remove those partitions.

Odd, but I don't see where your Linux 'swap' partition is/was...

I think ad0s2 is the swap and ad0s3 is the RH main installation.

A swap partition is marked as such, but the two that show up are clearly marked as ext2.

Red Hat defaults to three partitions, a small /boot, your normal root (/), then a swap partition. When I have observed them, their order is always the same order as I mentioned them.

Not sure where your swap is though.

    • When you're in enterprise IT environment, you're kinda forced into it...otherwise I'm not touching any mail client for personal use.  I can't stand New Outlook. It's complete trash - half the features I need in (Classic) Outlook are just missing in New Outlook. I haven't talked to a single person who actually likes the new client.
    • I think it's cute that Apple is implementing their tools at precisely the same evolutionary level as other devices' tools. In other words, I see no innovation; it's "the same but different." "Hey Siri, help me write this document about shoes." Powered by Google. "Sure thing, while we're here, can I interest you on some Nike's? They're on sale at Target right now!"
