From everything I've read so far isn't the HD-DVD standard small enough of a variation on the DVD standard that production costs are still cheap (and they can keep existing DVD fabs and convert them cheaply) yet still offer the HD benefits? It also seems to be the format of choice when it comes to windows, and the mass production of generic HD-DVD drives for PCs go a long way to bringing costs down in consumer players. The video game industry is already thinking of upping cost of games to $60, if HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray DVDs are up to $30, that's just an insane amount of money. And personally, I don't see either format taking off like a rocket anytime soon, except maybe in PC hardware for storage. I know ALOT of people who are barely making the conversion from their VHS to DVD and to tell them "Hey, you should get HD-DVD because the picture is even MORE clearer!"
