Japanese developers leaving PS3 development

Japan?s recent general election, featuring Koizumi?s battalion of ?smiling assassins? [high-profile women media personalities and diplomats designed to dazzle voters], resulted in an emphatic victory for Koizumi. This winter, the next-generation gaming industry also appeared to be gearing up for a general election. The question is, which next-generation console will be victorious?

In the middle of this month, the gaming industry?s biggest event, ?Tokyo Game Show 2005″, was held at Makuhari Messe. The catch cry for TGS was, ?You can see the future from the front seat.? Smiling wryly, a major software company executive remarked, ?We [the software industry] are the ones who really want to see the future.?

With a sigh, he continued: ?Next-generation game consoles are like a general election. For software makers like us, [choosing a platform to develop for] has been a drawn-out process similar to choosing a political power or political party to support, and it is extremely difficult to predict the outcome.?

The highlight of this general election for the gaming industry will be seeing whether the ?Oda-Nobunaga [powerful Japanese ruler and well-known historical figure] of the industry? Ken Kutaragi and his Playstation camp can exude the same powerful charisma as [Japanese Prime Minister] Junichirou Koizumi.

An industry insider remarked, ?The outcome will depend on whether gamers support Sony executive Kutaragi in his firm belief that the evolution of the game console [hardware] will result in a bigger market for Sony.?

In the periodic management plan Sony released on the 22nd, Sony had the following to say about their high-tech creation, the PS3: ?Our top priority is to bring innovation to the market by next spring.?

Most believe it will be a decisive victory [for Sony], with the catch phrase ?Don?t stop evolution?, much like Junichirou Koizumi?s election victory with his catchphrase ?Don?t stop reformation.? However, another industry insider confided, ?This is nothing but a nightmare for many Japanese software development companies.?

One of the reasons for this nightmare is soaring development costs.

The industry insider went on to say, ?Kutaragi has said, ?Please develop suitable software for PS3 - this software must not be of the same standard as PS2 software.? Developing software for the PS3 from scratch will require an initial investment of at least 2 billion yen [uS $17.6 million] [not including development costs]. There are not many software companies that can easily afford that kind of money.?

The prevailing rumor is that many software companies with difficulty may end up developing for the Xbox 360 (to be released on 10 December 2005).

The previous interviewee also said, ?Kutaragi is pursuing hardware evolution, and the credibility gap for him is now even worse than that of the GameCube era [when many developers defected from Nintendo].?

In fact, Microsoft is garnering support from many software developers and game creators in Japan. This kind of movement [spearheaded by Microsoft] is reminiscent of The Democratic Party of Japan?s general election catch phrase - ?We will not give up on the Japanese market.? Indeed, one software developer slated to develop exclusively for Sony is now questioning whether this was the right decision.

One journalist, a veteran of the industry, observes, ?The Xbox 360 is selling at 39795 yen [uS $350], whereas the PS3 will probably be more expensive. To draw a comparison with PC operating systems, the Xbox 360 is like a low-cost and stable version of Windows, while the PS3 resembles a high quality Macintosh [operating system]. Considering the economic variance within the world market, we may find that console selection depends heavily on geographic location.?

In an aside about the Nintendo Revolution, the journalist remarked, ?It will survive on the basis of its originality. I don?t know about [its prospects in] other countries, but it may win alone in Japan.?

Unlike Koizumi?s emphatic victory in the general election, opposition in the gaming industry is strong. Therefore, the future prospects for the battle of the next generation consoles look chaotic.

"Some people from the industry questioned whether Kutaragi has the right vision, saying "Kutaragi has unwavering belief that evolution of the game console is the only way to expand the market, I wonder if that will truly gather support from the game fans and win the battle."

Sony is touting the catch phrase "Don't stop the evolution", believing strongly that it will lead to big victory. Another person from the Japanese industry commented that "To many devlopers it's nothing but a nightmare".

The reason for the nightmare is the the rising cost of developing the games. With starting investment costs for developing for PS3 rising to around $20 million, many developers are looking toward Xbox 360 instead.

"In the (Japanese) game industry, many people are losing trust in Kutaragi's non-stop pursue of this evolution", "people are leaving PS3 at a rate worse than Nintendo's Game Cube era".

Koei will shift development from PS3 to other console if development is too high

"With Microsoft announcing its worldwide pricing scheme for the Xbox 360, the onus is now on Sony Computer Entertainment to decide how much its PlayStation 3 will cost consumers.

However, SCE also needs to assure third-party publishers that its next-gen console will be affordable for a wide enough audience to ensure PS3 games will be profitable to make. Recently, Koei CEO Keiko Erikawa commented that her company would consider shifting to another platform if PS3 development proves too expensive"

MS will, in my opinion, when the next gen war for one thing: MS is a software giant!

If I am not mistaken they are the largest software producer in the world as well as the largest developer help desk in the world. With XNA as the base format for all things graphical within the MS family, anyone, even the small japanese companies lacking the 17 million dollar budget can and will create games using MS propriety technologies.

Q: What's the difference between Microsoft's XNA and Sony's Cell?

A: In the next generation, software-not hardware-will drive the games industry forward. Microsoft XNA software brings together chip and OEM partners to ultimately deliver thousands of integrated digital entertainment devices that work together and give consumers choice. Sony is talking about a fixed world of hardware that requires everyone to buy everything Sony. Sony's Cell is a hardware solution. This is a software revolution.

Taken from MS XNA FAQ:http://www.microsoft.com/xna/faq.aspx

MS has given everyone quite a few options when it comes to next gen, and its exciting. MS made a smart move when it created XNA as its base foundation.

Plus the news of Sega cancelling a game already does not bode well for the PS3...This generation will probably see the end of sony dominating the console market

I can't believe this. The joy is beond expression. There is almost nothing I hope for more than to see Microsoft beat Sony, or at least give them a hard time this time around. Seeing how people claimed nobody would beat Sony EVER. (The same kind of people who believed Atari or Nintendo could never be beaten.)

 Very sad to hear this. First space exploration slows down and now the evolution of advance technology in console gaming?

Are humans really that simple, to pass prospects that will inevitably result in better games?

Someone give me an answer, why slow down the evolution? Because its cheaper to develop for the other? To make your life easier?

We just keep slowing down and down....

Whats so amazing about the PS3 that makes it any better then the X360? The Cell? Pfft, cell is the reason no one wants to develop for it, its too hard to make the games efficient.

Hardware is no good if its hard and expensive to use. Thats not evolution.

Its not much but it is an advance, this is just like the Blu-ray and HD-DVD war.

Superior should be the main focus for everyone. I'm serious.

Its never a waste of time when you're helping the evolution of technology.

It sucks to see people holding back, never going for that extra mile. Etc etc.

TGS 2005: Full Japanese PlayStation 3 lineup revealed

Playable games a no-show at event, but Sony reveals rock-solid third-party support with 102 games and 71 publishers.

TOKYO--One of the biggest, and most unfortunate, surprises at the Tokyo Game Show 2005 so far has been the absence of any playable PlayStation 3 games. However, that didn't totally deflate the spirits of those present, as Sony Computer Entertainment released its full lineup of Japanese PS3 games at the show. The list revealed a massive amount of third-party support for the console, which is sure to heat up the next-generation console war with Microsoft's Xbox 360. Sony currently has 102 games scheduled or already in development for the PS3, with 71 publishers on board its next-gen bandwagon.

One thing striking, if not terribly surprising, about the PS3 lineup is the massive amount of sequels it contains. As previously reported, Atari is releasing a follow-up to Alone in the Dark, was well as new installments in its Stuntman and Driver series. Ubisoft is releasing a third installment of Brothers in Arms on the PS3. SNK Playmore has already announced King of Fighters Maximum Impact 3, even though the second installment for the PS2 won't be coming out until the middle of next year. Wrestling game developer Yuke's also revealed it had an unidentified game in the works, raising the possibility of the first next-gen SmackDown! game or that the Xbox 360 Rumble Roses will be multiplatform.

Konami already announced Metal Gear Solid 4 at E3, and now it's revealed a new Gradius game is in development. The company is also making a soccer game, most likely the first next-gen Winning Eleven. Namco also has a good lineup scheduled for the PS3, with unnamed fighting, shooting, sports, and role-playing games in the works. While it's almost certain that the "fighting game" is the already announced sixth Tekken, which was shown at E3, the RPG's title remains a mystery--a next-gen Tales perhaps?

As for new games, Koei revealed it is working on two original properties for the PS3: an action game called Blade Storm: Hundred Years War, the latest brawler from Dynasty Warriors series developer Omega Force, and a racing game ominously titled Fatal Inertia. It had previously announced its Akira Kurosawa-inspired action game Ni-Oh at E3 in May. D3 is publishing Digital Extremes' Dark Sector, one of the first games announced for next-gen consoles. Genki is making a new release for a "racing game series" and a "Japanese sword fighting game series," which are probably new iterations of Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Kengo.

Surprisingly, not many companies announced games for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 at the Tokyo Game Show. Capcom reconfirmed that Resident Evil 5 (called BioHazard 5 in Japan) will come out for the PS3 and Xbox 360, and From Software revealed its newly announced game, Armored Core 4, is in development for both platforms.

While it's generally said developing for next-generation consoles will be tough on small publishers, today's PS3 list had a fair amount of budget game makers on the list. The small publisher named Magnolia will be releasing its affordable "Value 2000" series once again on the PS3, which, as the name suggests, sells at the low price of 2000 yen ($18) plus tax.

Also of note in the PS3 lineup is Arc System Works' unnamed "fighting game tool," a mysterious-sounding project from the company well-known for its Guilty Gear X series. Interestingly, Hudson is bringing its Rengoku series from the PSP to the PS3--the first time a series that debuted on Sony's handheld is making its way to a console.

Evolution is hard and expensive, but not many seek to pursue it because this world is filled with so many lazy people.

Seriously tell me, when has evolution been easy and cheap?

I want Sony to get their ass handed to them this time around just to let them know they don't own the market. As for Kutaragi, put up or shut up! Quit shoving BS down our throats and deliver what you boast about all too often.

....And while I'm bitching, damn you Sony for pushing the DMCA down our throats!

I feel better now :)

meh, orange and the rest of the fear mongerers im sure were saying the same crap when it was the ps2 and xbox duking it out- they say hardware wont push sales, software will- and they are right -which is why the PS2 handed the xbox and GC their asses to them and will probably do it again with the PS3. Im not overly biased, infact i dont even know if im going to get any next gen consoles, but Sony is just too strong. You think the PS2 was anything special? aside from the dvd player the hardware was crap, -lets just say that my xbox and GC are collecting dust while my PS2 gets a workout every week with great new releases
