iPod Touch v2 Secretly Has Bluetooth, But Will Apple Enable It?

8:46 PM on Wed Sep 10 2008 By matt buchanan

In their teardown of the iPod touch version 2, iFixit found a secret surprise: A Broadcom Bluetooth chipset! Though totally unannounced and not listed on the spec page, the iPod touch's Bluetooth chipset supports 2.1+EDR. We don't know for sure yet if it has A2DP, which would let you use stereo headphones—and be another hardware one-up over the iPhone besides the built-in Nike+ functions. We've got our fingers crossed—what else would it be used for?

My electronic wet dream come true. I hope this means wireless song transfer and support for bluetooth devices (i.e. bluetooth headphones).

Perhaps their plans for it are unfinished and they wanted to make sure the hardware was there for a future update, so they don't totally screw over current owners with the next refresh. However they did this time around.

If they copied the Samsung P2's ability to pair with a cellphone you could use the iPod Touch as a phone without being locked to ridiculous iPhone contracts. Although I doubt that would ever happen.

edit: nevermind, looks impossible since the iPod doesn't have a mic.

i wouldn't be surprised if apple charged money to activate it (aka ipod touch 2.2 firmware), just like the wireless-n enabler in macbooks

it was not apples fault they had to charge some bucks for the wireless-n enabler... it was due to some legal issues, iirc. ;)

interesting, nevertheless. =)

we will see what it actually is in the future.

I kinda got the impression in that case Apple were like "yeah, buy this *cough* download it!! *cough*". But perhaps thats just me.

And its an ANT chip or something, not Bluetooth

certainly they were not like "oh crap, now our poor customers have to pay! we feel so bad now!" ;)

ha now that makes sense. they said the reciever was built-in. has anybody discovered anything like that "bluetooth chip" yet which could be there for nike+? if not, we know what it is. =)
