AVIs Causing Windows 7 to Freeze

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I've been playing around with the leaked Beta for the past few hours and it's been working great for the most part. I'm actually running it on my dinosaur of a computer, a P4 1.8Ghz. Much to my surprise it seems to be running much faster than XP SP3 on my other partition (the boot time alone is about 10 seconds compared to almost 30 seconds with XP - don't even get me started about the time I tried to run Vista ultimate on this thing). I even managed to install the Intel onboard graphics drivers even though they haven't been updated since 2004. Pretty awesome.

The problem came when I went to play a few of my AVI files. As soon as I double clicked a file, the whole system would lock down; the mouse would freeze and Ctrl+Alt+Del did nothing. I did a hard restart and thought it might've been because I hadn't installed the Divx codec yet, but even when I did, it still froze. I then thought it might be an issue with Windows Media Player, so I installed PowerDVD and even that froze. So, I'm guessing this is a bug in the Beta OS itself. I've never had this happen before in either XP or Vista.

Has anyone else experienced this and/or know some type of workaround?

Bad codec. Get a decent one like Fdshow

You should know by now that Win7 supports most common codec OOTB. You don't need to install anything unless you are using some truly weird codec.

I'm starting to think that the problem might have to do with my graphics drivers and not any codecs. Here's why:

1. I uninstalled the standard Divx codec and replaced it with FFDShow as mentioned above. I try to play a video file and it freezes.

2. After restarting, I uninstall FFDShow and try to open the file from PowerDVD itself, instead of double clicking it (it freezes). I restart again and try to open it in WMP and the same thing happens.

3. I then decide to see what happens when I try and play a DVD. I put it in, wait a few seconds for WMP to pop up and as soon as it does, the computer freezes. I didn't even press any buttons that time.

So, it looks like I can't play any video files for whatever reason. It doesn't look like anyone else has had this issue, so I'm guessing it might have something to do with the workaround to get my graphics drivers installed properly. But that's weird because I used the same workaround when I was using Vista and it played video files just fine. Any ideas?

No, since I'm still stuck on how it boots 3X faster than XP, and in 10 seconds. I didn't think any machine on earth could boot it in 10 seconds, let alone an old one. And if it boots it in 10 seconds, comparatively XP should 5 at most.

I haven't tried playing an AVI, but one of my machines would always freeze (after a clean install of Win7) when it got to the video phase of the performance index evaluation thingy...and something else (can't recall what, exactly) that also had to do with video.

I disabled hardware acceleration, and that problem went away. Of course the system crawls, but it's something to try...

I had this same problem with the 7000 build, but not with Vista or earlier, pre-beta builds of Windows 7.

Windows 7 is supposed to allow the CPU to provide acceleration when the GPU is lacking, and I wonder if this has something to do with that because disabling D3D acceleration fixes the freezing, but makes video playback choppy so it's not really a good fix.

My GPU is a Geforce4 Go 420 32mb ( so it should be able to handle *some* acceleration) and my CPU is a ULV Pentium M 1Ghz.

I don't think it's a driver issue, especially because newer drivers have the same problem.

What video card are you having this problem with?

It could be lots of things, you cannot just say AVI's crash Windows 7 Beta because they do not, i have run multiple avi's with no extra codecs installed and all runs fine, even though i love running them through BS Player or something anyway.

It could be multiple problems, Video card, Ram...You would have to find the crash log to investigate further.

I would say install the newest videocard drivers, Disabling D3D hardware acceleration is not an option inside Windows Media Player but i know the option is in options panel in PowerDVD which if that option is causing the problem then i might come down to drivers or a bad overheating gfx, and this should not have anything to do with the root cause of the problem unless there is something wrong with your GFX card, Is it mounted in the PCI-e slot properly? try removing and placing it back in, firmly pushing down, Have a GFX card slighty out of the Slot can cause freezing.

Maybe a bad GFX that overheats?

We're not saying that playing an AVI will always crash Windows 7. What we ARE saying is that in our configurations, trying to play AVIs hard locks Windows 7. We can't check the crash log because there is no crash log, because the system locks up entirely before one is generated. It's not a bad GPU. And if you read, the OP has integrated graphics, while I have a mobile GPU, so it's not an unseated card. Nor is it a RAM issue. To further confirm that it is none of these problems, AVIs, WMVs and everything else work just fine in Vista and XP. So it's clearly something that's different about Windows 7--it may be that it's not compatible with the drivers we're using, but the most current drivers that I could find to use with my Geforce4 Go 420 32mb GPU still have the problem (and they were Vista drivers).

D3D acceleration can be disabled system-wide by moving the video acceleration slider to the left in video properties. Each notch disables some of the acceleration, and the problem persists until you get to the one that disables D3D acceleration. So clearly there's an issue with Windows 7's implementation of D3D acceleration when compared to Vista's and XP's with some older graphics cards. Hopefully this issue will be addressed, because I'd really like to pick up a copy of Windows 7 for this system once it's released. But not being able to use any D3D acceleration in video playback is a killer, because without it, videos are really choppy.

Thanks for trying to answer, but what I'm really looking for is other people who have experienced this problem, what they've tried and any fixes they may have found--if a driver update did work, or if the only thing they found that works is disabling D3D acceleration.

Why would you even install Windows 7 on Geforce4 Go 420 32mb GPU? Unless you are only installing the Basic version? A card with these specs arn't even supported or recommended for this version of windows.

It's either a driver or DirectX 3D Problem, DirectX can be faulty and you can repair stuff like this.

Get yourself a program like SiSoftware Sandra tools which does a burn in test and it tests your hardware and software and directX for any problems.

I recommend running that software.

And Geforce4 Go 420 do have freeze problem with hardware acceleration, just Google it, quite a few people get OS lockup problem due to enabling hardware accelerating :)

Same problem here.

I tracked the problem to the intel 915 video driver...

if i uninstall it, i doesn?t have acceleration, but neither have crashes.

Can i try a vista driver here?

any solution?

thanks

Ditto except and only WMP freezes and its kinda random. For example sometimes when WMP freezes I can't even end process it and even force shutdown succumbs so I have to cold boot the laptop.

The new WDDM pre-release driver that Winupdate offered up for my Go7400 cause intermittent flickering so I rolled back to the stable OEM driver so that can't be the reason.

Kinda annoying and am relying on VLC now.

I still have 6956 on another partition but unfortunately Build 7000 doesn't give me a boot manager to access it. Any ideas how?

Your issue is a little different than the rest of us--for us, trying to play an avi, wmv, DVD or anything DirectX accelerated causes a complete freeze and hard lock. It doesn't matter what software we use, either.

I'm wondering if it might be an issue with the 855 chipset or drivers, because it happens across several different video cards, though I belive they are 855 chipsets. I'll see if I can't find chipset drivers that fix the problem.

DxDiag reports no problems and I tried to install Sandra, but during the install it reported that DirectX 11, 10 and 9 were all not installed (though DX 11 certainly is), so it couldn't tell me anything.

I'm having the same issue. Compaq x1010us laptop (kinda old). I believe it is my video card driver. I cant even run some of the OOTB screensavers because it says my video card does not support Direct3D (which is not true).

I can not play any Video files at all. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. I had to install the XP driver becuase it is the most recent one I could find.

Has anyone figured this out? How do I get Direct3D working on my pc? That is most likely the reason I can not play videos.

Thanks.

Hopefully the forum wont give me Cr*p for this, but below is my dxdiag report. According to this report (run on W7 beta 7000) there are no issues with my DirectX support, yet I can not run the Direct3D screen saver, nor can I run video files.

Well, I found Intel's INF update utility for 855 chipsets (I'm betting we all have 855 chipsets) but no love. It installed, but video still locks.

Beta Master: the mobility Radon 9200 supports DX9, correct? If so, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. Of course, that doesn't mean much.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Rabbit-

I was running XP Pro SP3 before with DX10 with no problems. This is a MAJOR blow to my running Windows 7 right now. I bit the bullet, went full fledged install with W7 beta 7000 and this is by far the biggest glaring issue.

Has anyone found any other threads, postings, forums regarding this issue?

This is the only thread on the web I have been able to find.

Please everyone, stick to finding a solution for this.

Thanks.

And I was running Vista Ultimate SP1 with no problems. No Aero, but everything else worked great. I've found a couple of other threads, but they've got much less info than this one. This is really frustrating because other than this (and some minor things like not waking from sleep) Windows 7 blows Vista away, especially the tablet enhancements.

I completely agree!

The most frustrating part is that I cant believe that you and I are the only ones with this issue. Lets make sure we work together to try and find a solution to this HUGE problem.

You aren't alone,

Installed Win 7 on:

Intel 1.5Ghz

Intel 915 Accelerator

2Gb Ram

Freezes randomly ( Random: I think possibly when Windows Presentation Foundation is used) and when doing Windows Experience Assessment on Windows Media Decoding Performance.

Video freezes up and hard drive keeps working.

After uninstalling graphics driver no more freezing.

Windows Experience Assessment passes.

I think that maybe the driver tries to access something not implemented in the hardware.

If anyone finds a solution please post.

Thanks

After much searching, I found some people with Gigabyte m704 UPMCs on the UPMCPortal.com forums having the same problem. The M704 uses a Via chipset, processor and graphics, so I guess it's not the intel chipset causing the difficulty.

It seems to be an issue with older/lower-end video hardware. None of the GPus having trouble have hardware support past directX 8.1. It seems to be some issue with the implementation of directx 11, since vista and directx 10 work fine with allot the GPUs.

I just really hope this gets fixed before release because Windows 7 seems great, but no directX acceleration for video playback is a deal-breaker.

I may be having the same problem. Although I haven't run a video on it, every time I try to rate the system it hangs on "assessing windows media decoding performance". I also have a low end video card on a Lenovo X41 tablet (Intel 915GM).
