Bruce Smith set the record for alltime career sacks today. After 19 seasons, out of the graduating class of 1984, he broke the record. Should there be a limit on how many years you can play for this record? I'm just not feeling how special this record is made out. But never the less, he is averaging 10 sacks a season, which is almost a sack a game, which doesnt look bad on paper.

Agreed. Had Reggie played right into the NFL as opposed to the USFL, that record would be out of sight. Playing 19 years is way too long.
go bruuuuuuuuuuce. im happy for him.
I thought he just tied the record, but still that is a long time to get that record and since I like reggie white I'm disappointed his record didn't stand up.
Good for Bruce tho, maybe now he can retire lol

haha really.... i mean think of his knees and body - its got to be tore up
What's a sack?
A tackle on the QB behind the line of scrimmage.
And now you've lost me
It is when a defensive player tackles the Quarterback behind what's called the 'line of scrimmage'. That is the line where the ball was 'snapped', or put into play.
For example. The play starts at the QB's 40 yard line, and the Quarterback is tackled at the 35, that is a sack.

On a more serious note...does anyone else really not care about this record? Yes it's nice and all that he got it, but he stuck around just to get it. And really, Deacon Jones probably would have put the record out of reach.

This is very true. Deacon Jones really owns this record. His sack (amount) is huge.

Yeah, but Hank Aaron did pretty much the same. By the time he broke the Babe's record he was pretty much done as far as complete player. I think that longevity can't be snubbed - it really takes somehting special both physically and mentally to play long in football (unless of course you are a kicker, but they aren't really football players anyway

).

Aaron still hit 40 HRs in 1973, at age 39. that put him at 713, one shy of the babe. now, he only hit 42 more home runs in the final 3 seasons of his career, but all he did in those years was extend the record, he was still a very good player when he broke the record.

True you can't discount a player for longevity and actually producing for an extended period of time but what I was implying is that the "sack" didn't become an official stat until 1982 so they never kept track of it. Deacon played from 61-74 (I think) and from what I've read had over 200 "sacks" if the stat had been recorded during his career.

True. No one ever measured anyone's sacks before that time. Now, one's sack capabilities is very important when identifying a players qualities.

sorry
they should have specail scales to measure the sacks. maybe they could even rig him with sensors the measure the full impact the sack has

ROFL! good one baby.
What's interesting is when two men share a sack. They only get credit for a half a sack. That's when things really get weird. I mean, either you have a sack, or you don't. We don't share sacks. That's just silly.

you have to have the utmost respect for the qb though. getting hit constantly by all those sacks. a true test of manhood

Yea, you can only take so many sacks to the head before you retire, look at troy aikman he had so many sacks on him that he had to leave the game.

That's right. Remember Michael Strahan? I remember Brett Favre just giving Strahan his sack. That was just wrong.

That was just wrong. A lot of people work hard for a good sack. A sympathy sack just doesn't cut it.
shoot, earning that much money, sometimes you just gotta take the sack.
